On a lazy Sunday before Labor Day, kicking back cooking some ribs with family with a 'Storm' starting to roll in. Light, sweet honey nose with an extremely faint amount of smoke and salt. Medium body on the palate. Toffee and honey sweetness partnered with strong burn on the tongue. The sweetness and burn slowly dissipate leaving a brown sugar sweetness with some spice with a medium-length finish. Very similar to 10, but without the prevelant peatiness on the nose. Also slightly less complex than the 10, but very enjoyable. Water mutes the nose, tames the bite and the sweetness. Better neat. I prefer the 10yo, but this is a very good dram. The young characteristics dominant the finish with spice and bite. Let it breathe and the sweeter characteristics of brown sugar become pronounced and the spiciness subdued. This was my beach house scotch of 2015. The maritime notes and salty air were a good pairing. I found the brown sugar notes really came out while this breathed 15 minutes or more.
Currently here in Pennsylvaina, it's $68.99 a bottle. State-owned liquor stores... zero competition. I live in the armpit of America, there are worse parts of the anatomy, granted, but I don't buy spirits in-state anymore!
Local to me, I can pick this up for under $40 so it's actually cheaper than the 10. If it was marked up 10%+ over the cost of the 10, I would not purchase it. So, agreed, I can't justify the cost as well.
Very balanced review, I've only had a taste of the 10, but if Storm is less complexity, peat smoke and only faint ocean notes, I can't justify its nearly 15% greater price... Especially with no age statement... :-/
