I gave this 4 stars for one simple reason: it continues to challenge me. When I first tried it I thought it was overly woody and dry. The aroma was loaded with rye and oak with a hint of caramel. The taste...whoa. I drink whiskey neat, and I was almost taken aback by how dry and woody OF is. Not oaky, as in rich earthy oak. I’m talking WOOD, as in well cured antique lumber. This is followed up with a good wollop of rye, a bit of char, and a dry almost gin-like heat that carries into a surprisingly long finish. Then I got the notion to drop an ice cube in, and it opens up into a wonderful rich bourbon, still full of that dry woodiness that I’ve not encountered elsewhere. All this at a mere 86 proof, color me intrigued...
