Wow. I took Cascodes recommendation and ordered a sample and my taste buds are very happy I did (my wallet maybe not given I'm now going to have to try more Mezcals). Smells like ashy dirty sweet green pepper which translates to the palate with sweetness and salt. Nice. I really like this. Still have ashy aftertaste on my tongue. Bit like Rich M not sure what to score this one. Its definitely 4.25 territory maybe even higher even without any Mescal frame of reference. It's a toss up between this and Cognac as my 2nd favorite after whiskey. Will have to put it head to head against Martell xo shortly....and then I did. Tough one I like them both for different reasons....call it a draw....and then onto a freshly opened bottle of Ardbeg Kelpie (num, num) and then back to the mezcal. After that round robin session and drinking more of the mexcal not sure I could have too many drams in a row..the capsicum flavour is starting to get overpowering. Still very nice and interesting.

@1901 Try Jose Cuervo Reserva De La Familia Tequila. Haven't drunk a lot of tequila but this was a good one!
@cascode @PBMichiganWolverine it is more that I don't care for it rather than despise it, and it has been Jose Cuervo too. Nothing for it but to test the theory out
@1901 @cascode I haven’t found a tequila I like so far, but seem to like some mezcal. So some truth to that theory
@1901 If you absolutely dispise tequila than you may not like mezcal, as there are many similarities. If you simply don't care for tequila much then you may be pleasantly surprised. Comparing Del Maguey Chichicapa to, say, Jose Cuervo is like comparing Laphroaig Lore to Johnny Walker Red.
@cascode I'm not a huge fan of tequila so might that mean I'll likely fall in the latter group?
@Soba45 You can get the range in NZ! Mate! If they have Pechuga, Tobala or Santa Caterina Minas then grab it.
@1901 It's polarising- I introduced two mates to mezcal, one was instantly hooked, the other thought it was repulsive and nearly gagged.
@1901 Cheers:-). Yeah I love trying out new different things and this was definitely that!
@Soba45 nice review. Never dipped my toe into these waters but now I am intrigued
@dubz480 Cheers. Ah nice, a place I'd love to go but sadly to far away here in NZ. Texas was the closest I got!
@PBMichiganWolverine Yes the vino de mescal isn't on MoM sadly will have to keep an eye out for in the future :-)
@cascode Ah actually no there is a mexican food shop here that has the range!
@cascode Thanks for introducing me :-). Yeah I really had only heard the name and just knew basic difference between this a tequila. MoM seems to be the place to go for it (that delivers to NZ)
@Soba45 Great Review. I'll be in Mexico next week so will have to search this one out!
@Soba45 @cascode del maguey is the top of the mezcal line here too. The only one that’s better is Vino de Mezcal, which is rare as heck. It’s from single person operations in the middle of no-where in Mexico
@Soba45 Welcome to the rabbit hole. Since my purchases last year it's been almost impossible to find and Del Maguey in Australia - might have something to do with the new owners? Who knows. We've had a few now expressions available from others (Vago, etc) b ut on the whole we're pretty starved for mezcal here.
