There are heaps of great distilleries in the whisky world, but if I had to emulate one it would definitely be Springbank. Everything is admirable:
*over 100 years of history still owned as a small family business
*100% production in-house
*old-fashioned floor malting
*local barley used
*no chill filtration
*natural color
Even though the Springbank 10 is the lowest rung on their ladder of whisky offerings, it still shines like a star. The nose transports me to the working fishing docks with smoke, slight peat, fish jerky, & salty notes showcased. It’s aggressive but enticing. All those notes reappear on the palate with some additional sweet fruitiness & brine. Every pour gets more enjoyable. A few drops of water softens the rough edges but is not necessary.
Rating: Highly rated with a score of 92 that is spot on. I’d probably even go a point or two higher. It’s refreshing to get a modestly priced whisky of such high quality as a throwback to the style of the old days. A no brainer for any collection and my favorite 10 year old bottle (sorry Talisker). Cheers & enjoy

@PBMichiganWolverine just realized I commented again on an old thread. I’m special sometimes. But, to answer an old question I just recognized my top distillers change like the wind. Lol. But, right know I’m loving Glen Scotia, Talisker, Springbank, Laphroaig, Ardbeg...but mostly just the uigeadail. Had some solid Tomatin’s lately. Had a Dalwhinnie Distillers edition I really liked the other day. That was my first Dalwhinnie. And of course my everyday staple JW Green and my favorite blend Cutty Sark Prohibition.
@SolanaRoots solid list. I haven’t had Benromach. Need to put that one on the wish list.
@1901 - Yeah, Spice Tree and also Great King St Artist’s Blend & Hedonism
@SolanaRoots For me Barry Crockett Legacy takes top spot for sure. I had a once-only, swift taste of Dair Ghaelach Bluebell Forest at WhiskeyLive Dublin that came close. Other than that I’m a big fan of Powers John’s Lane and Green Spot. What about your choice of Compass Box? I’ve only had Spice Tree.
@1901 Good calls, which Midleton is your fave?
@Basguns nice, another reason to love Springbank!
Albeit based on limited experience, so far mine are Talisker, Balvenie and Midleton for their single pot stills.
you forgot to add they also don't automate the whole lot and provide employment for many people in town.
Talisker, Lagavulin and Ardbeg for me.
@PBMichiganWolverine - Oh that’s a tough one as my top 3 tends to change year to year. Currently probably Springbank, Balvenie, and even though they’re blenders, I’m loving Compass Box
@deuce26 Never had Ledaig but good calls on the others
Top 3 distilleries? Easy. Springbank, Hazelburn and Longmorn. Ha!
@deuce26 @SolanaRoots which would be your top 3 distilleries? For me: Yamazaki, springbank, Lagavulin
@SolanaRoots Laphroaig? Ladaig? Ardbeg? Noteworthy no.
After contemplating more, I’ve settled on my current favorite 10 year old offerings in order: Springbank 10, Talisker 10, Benromach 10
Cheers @1901 - it’s a great one
Smashed it! @SolanaRoots Ditto to all those sentiments
