Jameson Caskmates IPA Edition

Nose: A soft fruity nose with mild lemon/lime, red apple and gentle vanilla floral aromas. There's also some yeasty and nutty hints and a suggestion of IPA. Warm and approachable, but don't nose too deeply because there's a metallic note lurking in the depths ready to attack.
Palate: A creamy arrival of bittersweet barley, dried fruit and brown sugar-water. The development starts to turn a little sour and verges towards the metallic. You sense the IPA note more on the palate than the nose.
Finish: Short. A slightly hard malty and fruit note that fades quickly leaving a faint sour hoppy tang.
I don't get a particularly strong IPA note to the nose of this, but there is that elusive aroma of elderflowers is certainly there. In the mid-palate and right at the end of the finish as everything else is fading away are when you most taste the hops.
Like its stablemate the Stout Cask finish, this is essentially Jameson's standard turned up by one notch, but with a slightly different finishing profile. This one is floral and hoppy whereas the stout cask is dark fruity/chocolate and cream, but the profile is stronger and more defined in this whisky.
It's pleasant and if the ordinary Jameson's was more like either of these caskmates editions I wouldn't be displeased. Nothing much to write home about really, but perfectly drinkable and worth a try, and worth buying a bottle if you can find it on special.
Oh yes, this is also a better mixer than the stout cask edition.

It’s decent if you are in a bar and there isn’t a good selection. Just less boring than regular Jameson in my opinion. But not great. Just good on the rocks in that situation.
Same here regarding the metallic note. I detect it often on budget Scotch and Irish. My guess is that it’s a combination of old, tired tannins from multi-refill casks and the personality of column distilled spirit. I almost always detect the smell hot metal in column distilled grain whisky.
@Generously_Paul I pick up the same metallic qualities mostly with Irish Whisky. Teeling Small Batch is another.
@PBMichiganWolverine I don’t take anything as far as supplements go. I just pick up on that metallic note when I taste Jameson. Actually it’s there with most of the Irish whiskies I’ve had and some rums as well. Grain scotches too, unless they are so well aged that all harshness has been removed.
@Generously_Paul that’s strange. Are you taking zinc supplements (multivitamins) or antihistamines (allergies) ? But if that’s the case, you’d see it for all wine and whiskey. Maybe Jameson has a higher concentration of brettanomyces, which is a yeast formed from spoilage.
That metallic note seems to be present in every Jameson I’ve had. Never been impressed with them
