This was sent as a blind tasting challenge by my motor city buddy @Generously_Paul sent 5 samples. I guessed 3 right, and named this one precisely as Yamazaki Distiller ( the sandalwood aroma gave it away). I’m a huge fan of Yamazaki. Their 18 is my top 3-4 single malts. This has that classic Asian temple sandlewood aroma, followed by a nutty hazelnut flavor. Well made, as expected out of Yamazaki

@PBMichiganWolverine glad I asked! Had been pursuing it recently, coulda been hella disappointed!
@Kyle-Brady personally, for me, the Yamazaki 18 is in my top 5. Yeah, it’s thick, oily, syrup-y. If you don’t like syrup-y, absolutely not worth the $500 asking price.
Is the 18 worth pursuing at this point? I've heard it described as syrupy, which is my ultimate turn-off in whisky. Definitely wouldn't want to drop that kind of money on something I wasn't gonna love.
@Generously_Paul I’m curious to see how you guys do in my game. I think India and Sweden will throw a curveball
I am regretting sending 3 with a sherry profile, although the Cardhu was not as heavily sherried. Probably wasn’t fair, but oh well, what’s done is done. Just happy you guys had fun with it.
"I had the same damn dilemma @LeeEvolved I thought the Scallywag tasted aged. Also, I think Paul really got us with the Cardhu 18 because it’s not as complex as most other 18s. Just sayin’. ;)"
@worldwhiskies95 yeah...not the touristy ones though. I’m Indian American...been to the Jain temples in Gujarat, Mahalaxmi in South India, and Trupathi...they light these sandlewood incense candles called ‘agerbathi’. It’s these aromas of the sandlewood mixed with the scent of marigolds and jasmines
Have u ever actually been inside an asian temple? I have been to asian temples in Forbidden City, Summer Palace, and Temple of Heaven in Beijing, Yuyuan Gardens in Shanghai, Imperial Palace and Senso Ji in Tokyo, Wat Pho and Wat Arun in Bangkok, and Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple in Singapore, but they were all in 2011 and 2012.
I think @Telex got 2 right as well. Not sure which.
@PBMichiganWolverine - I got the non-whisky right away. I even guessed brandy. I knew the Yamazaki was the non-scotch- even thinking it was either Asian or some local American whiskey Paul might’ve found to try and trip me up. The 3 sherried whiskies got me. The Scallywag was the one I thought was well-aged scotch- which tells me I should buy more from Douglas Laing. The Cardhu was a big disappointment considering it was 18yo. The whole experience was fun and I guess it’s my turn to make up a challenge. Hmm....
The brandy tripped me as well. Got that wrong along with one other. I was thinking wine finished speysider for the brandy. Color fooled me too.
I got 2 of the 5 right. The brandy and the Yamazaki. The other 3 being all sherry finished tripped me up. I almost changed one more that would’ve ended up being right after I saw the actual whiskies, but decided to stay with my initial guess which was wrong.
