Thanks to @The_Rev , I got a generous sample to try this. With my regular trips to Denver, I’ve been meaning to actually visit Stranahan’s, but my schedule generally only involves office to hotel back to office. Till then, this will have to do. I believe that the most noteworthy American single malt distilleries are Westland and Stranahan’s...the others can’t even come close. Products like this will just continue to get better as it ages more in the barrels. This one brings flavors of brown sugar, some mint, marzipan. Well made, but young...can do with some age to take off the roughness and slightly bitter finish. Till this ages, I’m going to instead try their sherry cask, which I’ve heard is better, but what I’d really like to get my hands on is their annual Snowflake, which is reportedly amazing enough to have lines overnight. Thanks @The_Rev for the pour!

@PBMichiganWolverine Wow, that’s very generous. Obv not expected or necessary but I’d be quite appreciative :)
@SolanaRoots btw—-when I open my Baller, would be happy to send over a pour to you. Will let you know when I open it
@SolanaRoots I paid $60 for Lot14, and earlier this year $90 for Lot17. Both in NJ. And the Baller, about $65, which was an oddity...bought 2 at that price. Flew off the shelves here
@PBMichiganWolverine what do you think is a fair price? Seems $85-$100 probably as good as it gets, but the Baller bottle online at $200-$250 is kinda ludicrous
@SolanaRoots and if you see them on the shelf, they’re getting pricier.
@The_Rev Had heard good things about the St George gins but have never tried. The whisky bottles are scarce even in CA - still have never seen Lots 16 & 17 on the shelf
@SolanaRoots If St George's gins are any indicator, then I can only imagine the quality of their (impossible to find here) whiskies.
@SolanaRoots that’s true—forgot about St George. You’re right—-It’s harder to get those.
Great assessment @PBMichiganWolverine - I’d add St George to that shortlist as on par or even superior to Westland & Stranahans (although price & lack of availability could impact inclusion in that list)
I visited Westland during a business trip to Seattle. Pretty much tried their core range, of which I thought the highlights were the 2/1 Garryana (2017 one), and 2017 Peat Week. The Garryana was especially noteworthy
Happy to share! I need to try some Westland, but I heartily agree about Stranahan’s status as a distillery. Hands down a finalist as the most consistently good distillers in North America.
