Nose: Red and green apple; juicy pear; slight cranberry; light smoke and peat; hints of vanilla custard and brown sugar; Lime?
Palate: sweet and tart fruit building into drying blast of pepper and sea salt; ginger; apple cider; sour hint of grapefruit; medium peat; medium viscosity.
Finish: Strong menthol; sherbet; slight anise/black licorice; drying; dark honey; hint clove and cumin; medium length.
Value: For $55-65 dollars? Meh.
Closing thoughts: While a somewhat unique and particular single malt, this dram just does not completely do it for me, especially given the price. But I can see why others really enjoy it. IMO you can do better for less if you want smoky peat (Ardbeg 10 comes to mind $45-50), or if you want light peat and maritime notes, Old Pulteney 12 is $30-40.
Updated Final score:
3/5

@SolanaRoots yeah I’m just not sure why the 10 is so off for me, especially given how I love the Distillers Edition and 18 yo.
@cascode I like the way you think! I actually happen to have a sample bottle left of the Springbank 10 so I’ll let this Talisker air out a bit and give this a try. Slainte.
@AntonioSchmid I’ll do that. Perhaps some more oxidation will shift my score a bit. I’d had this before but happened across a bottle at s good price so pulled to trigger. I’m a huge fan of the Talisker Distillers Edition and the 18 yo, but for some reason this one is off.
@cascode I love both and now I can’t wait to do that! Springbank for dinner and Talisker for dessert. Sounds fantastic.
@Rabbit_in_Red May I suggest an experiment? I see you rated Springbank 10 at 4 stars (I’d certainly agree). If you have some left try a dram of that and then a dram of Talisker 10. There is a fascinating affinity between them and the Tali might make more sense in that context.
Good review although I tend to rate this one quite a bit higher. Pretty meager this bottle has coloring/chill filtered though
Give it another try when you can. This one can really grow on you... First time I tried wasn’t sure if I liked it. Now can’t imagine myself without it. Really!
