Laphroaig 10 Year
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland

I saw that 60 Minutes was doing a piece on Islay last night, so I thought I 'd have a healthy pour of Laphroaig 10 while I watched. I normally use a glencairn for scotch, but decided to do a small rocks glass instead. I found that doing so cut down on some of the more medicinal/chemical notes (iodine, band aid, etc) and highlighted the more natural notes like campfire, seaweed (which I didn't get much of before), and freshly turned earth. A great creamy, buttery sweetness in the mid palate with a smokey menthol coating finish. I could drink this every day and never get bored.

@BDanner it’s one louder. Lol
@deuce26 See, most scotches only go to 10...Our scotch goes to EEEELEVVEN.
Try the cask strength if you haven’t. It’s Laphroaig “essence of man” times 11.
@BDanner haha! Laphroaig: the essence of man
@dubz480 $29 is roughly half of what it sales for here. For that price, not only would I drink copious amounts, I would use it as mouthwash, aftershave, body wash, coffee creamer, etc etc...That is just a couple dollars more than Jim Beam Black. Amazing...
@BDanner - that was a great piece on 60 minutes about Islay. Might be on their website.
@dubz480 It’s $29 at TW as well!
@PBMichiganWolverine I'll go pickup a couple bottles today!
@Richard-ModernDrinking Chandler AZ
@dubz480 dude,at $29...buy a case
@dubz480 where is your Costco and how soon can I get there?
@Generously_Paul - exactly right. In Pa they ask $50 and at that price it is still caseworthy IMHO. Some of my best tastes with this are that last single drop from the Glencairn. Amazing how much flavor can be packed into a single drop on the tongue. I have taken to doing very small sips with everything now, like wine tasting.
@dubz480 if I could find Laphroaig 10 for $29 locally I’d buy a case on the spot. Minimum shelf price in Michigan is $50 and I still consider that a fair price
@BDanner good to know. My Costco just got these in for $29 a bottle. Assuming it's worth me rolling the dice at that price if I enjoy the Lag expressions?
@dubz480...what he said. It does take a sip or two for your palate to adjust to the heavy peat. My first sip is always nothing but smoke. That second and third, etc really brings out the sweet notes to pair with it.
@Generously_Paul that makes total sense and why I found it to be overwhelming versus I loved the smoke on the Lag 16
@dubz480 I would say the Laphroaig 10 is slightly smokier, but they are so very different that the intensity of the smoke is the least of the differences between them. The 10 is a powerhouse of medicinal peat and maritime aromas. The Lagavulin 16 is more refined and elegant, but still has it where it counts.
Great review as always. I have yet to have a full pour. My local gave me a tiny taste a month back and the smoke was super intense to me. However, that was after me having a pour of Booker's, so that may have amplified the smoke on my pallette. Curious, when compared to Lag 16, is this much smokier?
