Local spirits can offer interesting variations in flavor, this one from a micro-distillery located in the Black Forest in Germany. Yeasty, slightly dusty and obviously young, the nose opens up with citrus and sour grapes, reminding of a semidry white wine. Arriving almost like a fruit brandy, the palate is oily and bitter-dry with an astringent floral touch. Was this whisky matured in ex-wine casks? Fairly hot around the edges, the finish is short and fresh with fading sourness and hints of wood bitter. A strange malt that tastes unlike anything I've tried before.

@PBMichiganWolverine Good to hear that things have improved for the micro-distillers in the US. In Scandinavia, liquor taxation is a constant pain when setting up a new distillery.
@Slainte-Mhath in the US, hundreds have literally popped up recently. Tax laws have changed here which benefited small distilleries. Previously, there was a $100 tax per barrel. It’s now changed that if you’re producing less than a certain volume, that tax is merely $10/barrel.
@PBMichiganWolverine You are right. Micro-distilleries usually don't have well-aged stocks, so most of their spirits can taste a bit youngish. However, the variation in styles and trying out new things (yeasts, casks etc.) makes them interesting anyway.
@Slainte-Mhath totally agree—-I’m a huge proponent of trying micro-distilleries. Most are too young, but you can find a diamond in the rough.
Additional comment: This is a regional product which is only available in Southern Germany. However, I do recommend that you check for micro-distilleries in your area. Give these spirits a try and support your local distillers. You might be surprised to find something interesting!
