Barrel #1066, 8 yrs 6 mos
This is one of the easiest sipping whiskies I've had. The notes that jump out on the nose and palate are butter and maple syrup covered waffles, licorice, spice, grape, and a little vanilla.
The app rating of 96 seems a little overexcited to put this in the rare company of some of the most prestigious whiskies made. But it's not exaggeration to call it incredibly good and a mind boggling bargain to find it at $29 like I did.

@PBMichiganWolverine They age has steadily decreased with this year's release just over 8.5 yrs. The ones you have if memory serves me right were both over 11 yrs old. McKenna is older and higher proofed HH stock, so it makes sense for HH to increase it.
@dubz480 makes one wonder why they’ve not increased prices, sort of like Henry McK 10 yr BiB
@PBMichiganWolverine Both are excellent. Pre 2005 they were hitting them out of the park each year. Hard to find a bad vintage!
@dubz480 hey, how’s the 2003 and 2004 versions? I didn’t realize it, but had those in my stash. Same level as 2005?
@dubz480 my issue is I consume very little...about an ounce on a Friday &/or Saturday. So, I build up quite a lot. And now, through 15 yrs of accumulated bottles, some of these have become rare unicorns (I’ve got a few Karuizawas, Hanyus, Broras, Rosebanks, Yamazaki, sherry cask, etc).
@dubz480 good to know and sadly, probably somewhat expected. Almost rare that the subsequent release of anything is better than the early/initial releases.
@Scott_E Having had them both, the 2005 is definitely better. That was a lovely release. I think the 2010 is still solid, just not on that level.
@PBMichiganWolverine yeah with that extra proof I am pretty sure it's excellent! 500+ bottles is beyond impressive. I am still south of 100 myself. Drink them too quickly!!
@dubz480 it’s 101 proof. Never really got around to opening it ( like my 500 other bottles )
I had the 2005 and was quite good and extremely affordable. I now have an unopened 2010 vintage. Will be curious as to how it compares.
@PBMichiganWolverine curious what was the proof on it? EW batch products are pretty solid too, so I bet it's still very good. The EW BiB is one of the better bottom shelf options out there IMO
@dubz480 I have the old 12 yr old which used to be gift shop only. Have no idea how that one is, but apparently ranked 90 here, so maybe not as good as this single vintage
The '05 was one of the best bourbons I've had. As it got younger and younger, I was buying the Henry McK 10yr for about the same price. Now the Henry McK has gone up about $7, it may be time to try this one again.
@Generously_Paul The 2005 and 2007 we're both very good. Never had the 2006, but have no doubt its pretty tasty!
@Generously_Paul reminds me of the kid who never uses his skates for fear of breaking them. At this this point your enjoyment is entirely at the mercy of when it was bottled, which has already happened.
@dubz480 of course that's a common motif as whiskey demand has skyrocketed. So many distillers losing their age statements, or reducing them. I don't think age is be-all end-all (barrel selection matters) but that a lot of bourbons have very young barrels in their DNA certainly speaks to the times we're in.
Not to out my source, but...you can get it for $19 at Costco, at least here in Wisconsin. It's already a good deal at $30; at $20, it's a no-brainer.
I’ve got one that is about 9 days short of being a full 10 years old, 2006 vintage. I keep putting off opening it for fear it will be great and I won’t be able to find another one as good
To be fair in 2013 when the app reviewed this one, it was significantly better. Age was always well north of 10yrs (2005 vintage and older). Agreed this is for sure one of the best values in Whiskey. Nice review!
