Soba45

Overeem Sherry Cask Matured

Single Malt — Tasmania, Australia

Reviewed February 23, 2019 (edited February 24, 2019)
3.5
3.5 out of 5 stars
An interesting drop. It's a dram of two halves. Marzipan / christmas cake icing honey, vanilla and hint of green apple on the nose. Palate expands on that with slight spicey burnt caramel oakiness. Initially I mistook it for metalic, plasticky ethanolly bitterness although that comes through more prominently on the aftertaste which lets it down a bit after the nose. Hard one to rate. 3.5. But for the aftertaste it would have been higher. Slightly disappointed given the reputation of the distillery.

@PBMichiganWolverine Depends where you are getting them. Aussie is a bit cheaper but generally they are just really hard to get it seems and expensive when you do. As the expression goes to paraphrase) if you can't bring the mountain to you... :-)

@ PBMichiganWolverine Yes- the red wine expressions is around US$300. Like all our whiskies, it's cursed by high prices, and it's not the fault of the distillers.

@Soba45 isn’t this well over $200? At that price, anything below 4 stars is flogging worthy

@cascode Ha yeah a lot of his highly rated ones I really don't think are that great yet I still think something's worth trying if he highly rates it....I have no idea why!

@Soba45 I've tasted a flyte of 6 at a whisky shop tasting a while back, but did not take extensive notes. The only one I've reviewed here is the port cask finish. It's OK stuff, but way overpriced for what it is. JM, yes, well he's JM, isn't he :) I buy the Bible every couple of years, but you have to take his views advisedly. I wouldn't recommend his opinions to a noob!

@cascode Ah interesting I was wondering if the CS and the rest of the their range was any good as JM raved at one point in time about them. I'm interested in trying out a few other Tassy distilleries. I saw flights for $460 round trip from wellington in September but had to many other trips planned this year so that got vetoed. Next year hopefully :-)

Spot on. Overeem gets a lot of praise from some quarters but I've always thought it to be a pretty average distillate polished up with huge, intense and fast cask influence. It's telling that every one of their current expressions is a NAS.
