Springbank 15 Year

Single Malt — Campbeltown, Scotland

Reviewed April 20, 2019 (edited April 21, 2019)
4.25
4.25 out of 5 stars

@1901 I understand why you prefer the 10 and 18 and you are not the only one. i consider myself as a peat lover but this Springbank's peat, in my opinion, work pretty well with "over" sweetness and i didnt find that this kind of peat was pleasant without sweetness.

Nice review (and helpful translation 🙂 which will also please @Rick_M ). As a contrary opinion, I think I prefer the 10yo and 18yo. To me this seemed overly sweet, probably because it is aged entirely in ex-sherry casks.

Gougle translate: info: To continue in this range of Sherry-Peaté, I am attacking this 15 years old from Springbank. So, we talked about PX for Lagavulin 16, here we speak about Oloroso cask. Nose: Brown sugar and dirty peat. Something sweet and salty. Sea salt. A chemical or plastic smell ... similar to the tarnish peat of Ardbeg. A fruity aspect. Green apples and grapes. Palate: A nice touch of peat! Not huge. A peat that does not crush the rest. But the presence is enough asserted so that it is decisive. We must like this kind of peat otherwise we do not like. A touch of oak, a touch of tobacco leaf, touches of vanilla and milk chocolate. Brown sugar is now chocolate. A black and deep fruit. Figs? Blackberries? It would be a good pairing with a cigar. Oily texture. Final: return of salt and bitterness of plastic or tar or tobacco ... or maybe copper. Grape and apple. Overall: I like this expression of Springbank. I can not say that I particularly appreciate the other editions that I had the chance to taste. This plastic peat has to harmonize to be nice. The 10, the 12 CS and the 18 seemed to me less balanced than this one (although it is not always a defect in itself). The balance between fruit, sugar, bitterness, peat and salt seems to me particularly successful. I think, I can not find an aromatic comparison in the same genre. The one and the 12 CS are the only ones that I will redeem. The first for originality and aromatic balance precisely. The second (12 CS) for the face punch. In short, for those who know they like this type of peat, it's a no-brainer. For fans who have not yet ventured into this field of aroma, I suggest to taste before to know if it's your style. For my part, it passes the test! 87%
