I’m one of those people who struggles to make decisions when presented with too many choices, so my first visit to Jack Rose in DC last night induced as much anxiety as pleasure. Confronted with more than 2,000 options, I wrestled with how to even frame the parameters for a selection. Should I order something rare from a favorite distillery? An interesting independent? A distillery I haven’t tried before? One of their barrel selections? After many minutes of agonizing, I settled on the latest local barley from Springbank, on the grounds that it was on my wishlist and wasn’t something I’d find in many bars. I wasn’t disappointed. Though I didn’t take notes, I did commit to memory a pleasant lactic quality on the nose and a savoriness on the palate. It’s complex and different enough from the previous two releases to make it worth your time, and no doubt I’ll revisit it at greater leisure in future. As for my next visit to Jack Rose, I think I’ll need to plan well ahead, perhaps by getting there an hour early to peruse the menu. The thought is already stressing me out.

@Richard-ModernDrinking You definitely need a plan when entering Jack Rose. The bar catalog is dizzying and you quickly find yourself lost in confusion: paralysis by analysis. Great bar. Good choice too, to sample.
@PBMichiganWolverine Maybe one day you will open one of your 4 Local Barley bottles and we can all read another of your great reviews :)
@SolanaRoots I’ve only had a pour of the 16, which was amazing. Little did I know then that it would become hard to find
@SolanaRoots you are correct. I’d pick the 10 out of the three of them, though it was hard to do a full appraisal of the 9 in a noisy bar with distracting friends
Nice one @Richard-ModernDrinking - if I recall correctly, you’ve had the 9,10, & 11 Yr Springbank Local Barley offerings. Which is your fave or which would you definitely buy a bottle?
We passed on our trip to Jack Rose last year prior to Whiskyfest because we had so much good stuff in the hotel room. I could see having trouble making a selection, too. One day I’ll make it up there. One day.
Love Jack Rose! That Whiskey Selection is unreal! Food isn't half bad either! Cheers!
