I think having tried a few older Armagnacs now I know why they haven't taken off as much. Firstly they taste mostly the same to me even more so than bourbon. Secondly they just don't seem to be as great tasting as I imagined they would be or say a good cognac. Thirdly in relation to the first point they just aren't that interesting or exciting to me. I've still a few to get through so maybe things will change overtime but it seems for me: whiskey, cognac, mezcal seem to be my top three spirits of choice. Tasting notes: bitter sasperella, bourban like cherry profile, heaver and slightly spicey oak.

@cascode Yes good points. I was wondering whether the younger ones would be an improvement. I have a MoM cask strength sample lying around somewhere as well which should be more interesting than the usual 40%!
I quite like armagnac but I'm happy to just have a single bottle in the house for when I occasionally feel like a glass. I certainly don't collect it like I collect whisky! I think the samey-ness is because it's single distilled and then receives huge wood influence so the older ones tend to veer towards the same profile. I prefer the younger and less oak-dominated bottlings, like the Tariquet VSOP I have open at the moment. Cognac is something I've only recently come to enjoy, after ignoring it for a long time, but that was entirely due to only having tried inexpensive versions, but again it's a spirit where one bottle on the shelf is sufficient.
