Really interesting. The nose is intense and is probably my least favorite part of the drink...it's just intense oak and fake cinnamon, almost like Big Red gum. Some dusty corn.
You get both of those elements on the taste, but it opens up to some more enjoyable aspects: vanilla, chocolate and yeasty.
Gives you a good burn to say goodbye.
I don't love it, but it's distinct and it's solid quality. Definitely worth trying if you're out at a bar, but I'm not looking to buy a bottle.

@bson I personally found a lot of their offerings quite one dimensional and over the top but it's a distillery with a rollercoaster history given the original genius distiller was forced out given he reputed was not a nice person. Unfortunately the quality then took a nose dive and I tried some uniquely terrible stuff even their traditional offerings. With the latest French Oak that @PBMichiganWolverine provided me a sample of they are back on track as it was well done.
@WhiskeyLonghorn @bson sounds in uniqueness to their Rye. Very different and innovative, but I was good with a few pours. Not sure I’d manage a bottle
@bson it is! It’s a really different kind of smoke too. It’s scrub oak smoked instead of peat or mesquite. A highly unique pour!
@WhiskeyLonghorn will keep an eye out for the single malt. Is the Brimstone the super smokey one? Heard something about it before and am not sure if I can handle it lol
@bson absolutely! Definitely check out the single malt. One of the best craft whiskies and American single malts out there! Baby Blue and Brimstone are two of my other favorites too. The rye is ok, better in cocktails.
@WhiskeyLonghorn Do you know of any other Balcones offerings that are worth trying? This one was interesting and you can tell there’s potential...just felt harsh.
That’s been the general consensus on this one in Texas. Needs a little more time in the barrel. The folks at the distillery said they have special plans for this one in time, but they just wanted something on the market to kick off the line. I look forward to the batches that come out in the next 2-3 years!
