so my expectations were really high when I found this bottle... they were completely met and probably even surpassed. I first got into HP because I could never handle the peat of islay scotch. HP18 is so good. it's more than just smooth and balanced, it's sublime. it sweet up front and then a thin layer of smoke comes in and fills your mouth. for me this is the perfect amount of smoke. the finish is fantastic and just hangs on to your tongue. this is one of the best whiskeys that I've ever had. can't wait to share it with friends.

@LeeEvolved, @Rick_M - my first Islay was Laphroaig 10. it was readily available at my local Costco and I wanted to give it a shot. i tried a few pours over 6 months but could never get over the heavy peat smell. it got to a point where I finally gave it to my brother in law since I could never really enjoy it. i was just starting to get into Scotch and I was overwhelmed. Folks I know who drink Islay tell me that Laphroaig is not super peaty and is a good entry Islay. I figured it was just an acquired taste and I hadn't acquired it yet.
Listen to @Rick_M- he knows what he speaks. You’ll come to love Islay if you give them a chance. Nice review, cheers!
@dcheng - when you no longer can find the smoke in a HP you’ll start reaching for Islay. It creeps up on you. :)
