Benriach tasting evening, Sydney, June 24 2019. Whisky #2
Nose: A shy but elegant nose with subdued cereal and floral notes - rice crispies, unflavoured yoghurt, pyrethrum daisies, peach and some musky vanilla. Over time the nose became even softer and more musky. It's pleasant overall, but rather restrained.
Palate: Very soft and notably slow arrival mainly featuring mild spice, a little honey and dusty oak. The development brings gently intensifying fruity notes, spice and some curious funky oak. Dried semi-sweet apricots, milk chocolate and vanilla cookies. The texture is fairly neutral.
Finish: Medium. A sawdusty and flat oak aftertaste with a little caramel.
I found this to be a curious whisky. Not unpleasant, but too laid-back and undemonstrative. The BenRiach house style is apparent, but everything seemed turned down to half volume.
The nose was the best part, being gentle and reserved, but the palate was tedious, quirky, dull and flat. Tasting it was like being on a train that took forever to get anywhere. It certainly did not project any sense of maturity to me - just a sort of resigned age.
Intensity is not essential in a whisky profile, but for a relatively expensive dram this was uninteresting. I'd strongly recommend tasting it before purchasing a bottle, as you might be sorely disappointed. On the whole I thought it was only "better than average" and at the asking price I certainly wouldn't buy it.

(Comments in Distiller are bugged and aren’t loading in the app so I am using the website here) I had a sample of the Temporis 21 and it is way too peaty for me. I tried to like it but since I’m very new to Whisky in general it is hard tk get beyond Talisker 10 peat. I was reading about the BenRaich Authenticus which is peated as well I just don’t know how much. Same applies to the Solstice and the Alabariza. I just don’t want to risk buying that expensive of a bottle and then don’t like he peat level. On the other hand the Curiositas is my favor whisky to date. The 25 pretty much is too expensive even here in Germany. I have the 15y Tawny Port which is really nice and wanted to improve from there. I guess trying to get my hand on more samples is due.
@Jan-Kaselitz The 21 yo Temporis is very nice but it's one of their smoky whiskies. In the non-peated range if you can still find it the 25 year old is very good indeed, but probably twice as expensive as the 21.
@cascode can you recommend anything from BenRiach in that age range that is better. I kinda liked the 16y but wanted to go a few steps further.
Yeah I find Benriach's standard year releases to be underwhelming and because of that never rated the distillery. Then stumbled across their special releases some of which were awesome.
