Ledaig 15 Rioja Wine Cask Finish
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland

This was another limited edition from last year, available at the Tobermory distillery and online. It spent its last two years in hogsheads that previously held Rioja wine, implying it was in ex-bourbon casks previously. The nose is sharp peat with a hint of something sweet underneath. Some heathery elements emerge with time. It’s better diluted to 50%, which brings out minty and meaty notes. The palate, like many of the older Ledaigs, is overwhelmed by the peat - it kicks in too soon and too strong. But tame it with water and you’ll find flavors of raspberry amid the spice and a long oily finish with the savoriness of cranberry. Peat and red wine can be a difficult combination and the balance isn’t quite right here. Still, worth trying for the fruity notes and I’m glad I have a second sample for further titration experiments.

@Rick_M They did after I inquired if they could. They processed the order via email and PayPal rather than online. I assume everything online comes from the same central Distell inventory rather than direct from the distilleries.
@Richard-ModernDrinking - did Distell consolidate your order and save on the shipping? How did you know which distilleries they do customs work for?
@LeeEvolved Buy two of each!
@Richard-ModernDrinking - thanks. I’m looking through what’s included with those dram packs to see if it’s worth a multiple order or not. I’m already not happy with the fact they are only 1oz samples, lol
@Rick_M @LeeEvolved I emailed [email protected] and they were super helpful. Here’s what I ordered: https://bunnahabhain.com/product/feis-ile-wee-dram-pack/ https://bunnahabhain.com/product/bunnahabhain-wee-dram-packs/ https://shop.tobermorydistillery.com/product/tobermory-wee-dram-pack/ https://www.deanstonmalt.com/product/deanston-wee-dram-pack/
@Richard-ModernDrinking will have to answer that. I suspect distell also ships for the other 2 distilleries.
@Rick_M - thanks Rick. That was the only sample pack I saw and I was curious at how Richard got 3 sets shipped together for one price. That’s what I ultimately want to do if possible.

@LeeEvolved - you buy from their website, but email their shipping agent to see if they deliver to your state. [email protected]
@Rick_M - can you guys share a link to this sample collection? Sounds like an easy way to try the special finishes range. Thanks.
@Rick_M Great. Look forward to comparing notes.
@Richard-ModernDrinking - got my order placed. Thanks for the tip!
@Richard-ModernDrinking - Thanks, I will take this route assuming they can ship to my state
@Rick_M If you want to try before you buy, all the samples I’ve tasted this week can be bought online from the distillery. I ordered a set from each of the Distell companies — Tobermory, Deanston and Bunnahabhain - and had them combine them for shipping at one reasonable price. They reached the US within a week.
Congrats on 400 :-)
Congrats on hitting 400 modern drinks 🥃
@Richard-ModernDrinking - its been over 10 years since my last bottle of Ledaig. I plan to spring for the 18yo based on reviews by you, @LeeEvolved and @PBMichiganWolverine. Congrats on 400.
@Richard-ModernDrinking Congratulations on 400 reviews!
Congrats on 400! Everybody’s hitting milestones around the same time. I’ve always enjoyed reading your take on whisky. Cheers.
(Maybe I should have picked something a bit more special for review #400. Oh well, I’m sure I’ll get to 500 soon enough, especially if I post all the notes that haven’t made it out of the drafts file.)
