I picked up this sample on the back of an enjoyable introduction to the distillery last Christmas by @LeeEvolved. This one was quite different to that fruity Samaroli bottling but equally tasty. It’s a solidly malty whisky - rich warm bread on the nose, with a pleasing hint of nasal decongestant, and robust toasty flavors in the mouth. The finish is long and delicately spicy. Surprisingly robust for the ABV, it’s a shame we don’t see Braevel outside of Chivas Regal blends more often. Definitely worth a taste or two (Master of Malt has samples) and I wouldn’t begrudge a bottle.

@LeeEvolved A search of Whiskybase reveals a clutch of young recent SMWS releases: https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/distillery/157/braeval?style=table&bottler_id=&brand_id=&vintage_year=2010&type_id=&itemsforsale=&votes=&sort=whisky.bottle_date_year&direction=desc
Nice review. I’d love to try a little more from Braeval as well. I probably would’ve been disappointed by this one because I’d have been expecting a more fruity dram. I wonder if there’s a younger IB offering somewhere at a more reasonable price, too? I’d love to try more from these guys.
@PBMichiganWolverine @Richard-ModernDrinking Yeah I had heard of the reputation so I grabbed a sample. As you say not a cheap variant
@Richard-ModernDrinking now it’s w/o rhyme or reason, since the original Samaroli had passed away some years back, and he stopped picking casks ages ago
@PBMichiganWolverine From what I read, very little is bottled independently. As for Samaroli, I would love to try some more of their stuff, but they price it like an Italian luxury good.
That Samaroli was pretty good. Till then, I had neither heard of Samaroli or Braevel. Seems to be an under the radar distillery
