I’ve had this many times. I used to work for a country artist that had everyone do a shot of JD before the show, so I’ve gotten pretty familiar with it. Everyone always shuddered after taking it, except when it was about the last 1/4 of the bottle. It had oxidized enough that took the edge off.
Anyway, now I’m tasting for the 1st time since I’ve really dove into whiskey and developed a much more in depth palate for it.
On the nose there’s vanilla and a whole lot of banana and ethanol.
The palate is sweet, some banana and oak, but a lot of rough alcohol flavor as it goes into the finish.
The big part finish that I get is a really unpleasant lingering alcohol flavor. More specifically, the smell of nail polish remover/rubbing alcohol and bandaids. That’s the part that used to make me shudder.
This is not a pleasant sipper. Too much rubbing alcohol. And it’s not even strong, which is surprising that it has such a present cheap alcohol taste to it. Adding water made it even worse.
I would say it’s fine with coke, which I’ve had countless times, but I’m learning that if you don’t like it neat, don’t drink it at all.
