I read an article recently about how distilleries were seeking inspiration from breweries in the malts and yeast types and how American was leading the way. I thought I'd really like to try something like that (done better than the 2nd Edition Glenmorangie Signet I had) and then promptly forgot about it. Next day having randomly selected a dram I tasted it and thought eh this is interesting, read the bio and low and behold a mixture of different malts and belgian yeast. You really do get the cocoa, chocolate coming through from the dark malts and that's after drinking a cocoa milk stout beer (and Bunnahabhain 18 in between). Would have loved to pair the beer with this whiskey. It's a young whiskey with a slightly thin body and aftertaste but that's to be expected.. you don't want the cask to overpower the spirit. I'd love to see what a decade more would do.

@BDanner Ha nice one. NZ is a small market with limited retailers so bargains are generally limited to a place having older stock they never bumped the price up on..and these days all that stuff is long gone
@Soba45 it is! Retail is around $70 here. I got mine on what was supposed to be a clearance of the older packaging. I found out later that the store I purchased them from was mistakenly selling the new packaging at the closeout price.
@BDanner Wow I didn't realise they were so cheap. I thought this would have been double that price given how unusual it is.
@PBMichiganWolverine No I remember you rating the former highly and being very interested in the type of wood. Sadly couldn't get hold of those variants but will be keeping an eye open!
@Rick_M I'd say these guys are batch dependent (and probably even variable within batches!). The sherry wood I didn't rate that well. I'd love to try the ones PBM mentioned as well especially the Garryana which from memory was rated well.
I really like this one. So much so that I stocked up on every bottle they had at a nearby ABC Store on closeout at $36ea. Amazing complexity for a 3 yr old whiskey.
@Rick_M although I think my high praise was because I visited their distillery. That adds a bit of bias
@Soba45 - Ive been eyeing these folks awhile mainly because of @PBMichiganWolverine ‘s high praise. Now 4 stars from you.....I’m in! :)
Have you tried their Garryana or Peat Week?
