Another classic example of someone in the kentucky area needing to get whisky shipped back to the kentucky area.
Nose - Christmas spice, wheat toast, vanilla and mint together, some under cooked yeasty bread,
Taste - spice, mint, rye bread, oak, caramel, and some tobacco. Really complex, could use some age to mellow out a few rough notes (see the 10 year rye which I can't get but tried last night for what age can do).
Very nice and a must get for a rye fan. I don't any of those off putting dill notes, the oak is there and not that overly young stuff. This will be a super high end cocktail mixer that is worth the premium and because of that, I'm going 3.25 as this has some special notes.

@jsk hope to see your thoughts on the parker's rye. It was a gamble for me to buy, won a lottery for the right, and I was very much rewarded for it. I love that extra charr they used.
Last I heard the MSRP on the Michter's was 80, but maybe it has changed recently. It also wouldn't surprise me that stores are marking it up due to demand. We don't get Old Carter in TX so I've never tried that; but I do have a bottle of the Parkers Rye that I'm planning to open on vacation in the next few weeks, so glad to hear you like it
@jsk I was quoted 110 for this year's rye batch at a local store. They let me talk them down, but I've got a really great relationship as I am part of a group that does store picks through them (so I help themsell hundereds of a bottles that way). Sadly it seems it's getting secondary pricing these days. As for the rye stuff, hard to say for me, but I think the old carter batch I had and Parker's from last year are my top 2. But I'm not a huge rye guy and thus you don't see many rye reviews from me.
As for a comparison of the other high-end ryes, I'd take WT Cornerstone or KY Owl Batch 3 over Lock Stock 18. The LS was a disappointment for me, everything was good until the finish, when this savory/vegetal note came in and completely overpowered everything else. This was a bottle from 2018, no idea how much batch consistency there is.
I love Michter's Barrel Strength Rye. Best sub-$100 rye on the market IMHO. I just wish they made more of it so I could actually find a bottle, rather than just the occasional restaurant/bar pour.
@SolanaRoots yeah, it is...and I think I have that in my vault somewhere. I also have the High West 21 yr rye ( now sadly discontinued) somewhere—-that’s on my must try too
@dhsilv2 No, I think you’re correct. Price is sky high but I’d still seek out a pour but no chance a bottle
@SolanaRoots isn't the lock stock 18 over 200? Like getting near 300? I know i saw it a while back but the price point for a rye was a deal breaker. Was I wrong?
@PBMichiganWolverine yes i had it at a friend's house about a month ago. It was an open bottle of about 2 weeks and he'd put a nice hurting on it. Jason from The Mash and Drum review channel just for context. We both agreed however that while he got all kinds of cherries on it when he opened it (I love cherry notes), that they'd faded on the open bottle. I'm not a turky fan boy and while it's really great whisky, I'm not going to get a bottle at 180. I have heard costco's have it for 160...still too much but the box and bottle (corks are amazing) kinda makes up for the whisky itself just being very good. I however would really like to do the cornerstone side by side with old carter rye as they're about the same price and I'd kinda of like to have one of the two just to have a higher end rye for friends. If you can get the Michter's 10 Rye...that blows all the other ones here out of the water. It's so good!
@PBMichiganWolverine the Lock Stock & Barrel 18Yr isn’t on your ‘to try rye’ list?
I’d there’s two ryes I’m looking forward to, it’s this and the Wild Turkey Cornerstone. The WD is a bit pricey. Have you had it, and if so, worth it?
