PBMichiganWolverine
Whiskey Del Bac Dorado Mesquite Smoked Single Malt
American Single Malt — Arizona, USA

American single malt craft distilleries can be a hit and miss. Some are decent. Most are bad. But all are pretty much bad VFM. Even the good ones are pretty bad VFM ( Westland Garryana, case and point). This one here is an exception. It’s sent courtesy from my southwestern buddy @dubz480.
Aroma is amazing. Morning after campfire. Ashes and burnt wood, with that distinct smoke smell. Taste is mesquite BBQ smoke ribs. In liquid form. This is what Balcones wished it tasted like.
This is probably my new favorite American single malt. Move over Westland, Wyoming, Stranhan’s, Balcones, and countless others. There’s a new American single malt king
. @dubz480 thanks! I’m buying a bottle

@PBMichiganWolverine I do feel like I need to pay them a visit and ask for a few bottles for us! haha
@1901 @dubz480 yeah...except unlike real social media influencers, we don’t get the freebies or get paid. Unfortunately. 😭
@PBMichiganWolverine @dubz480 you can now call yourselves "social media influencers" 😀 I count 3 purchases and several more heading to the checkout!
@SolanaRoots I was trying to see if I can first try a pour, hoping to find it on my regular travels to Denver. Wasn’t able to, so just bought a bottle.
@PBMichiganWolverine Curious to see what you think of the Colkegan. I was pretty harsh in my review but am still pondering whether I got a bad batch
@geologyjane @jonwilkinson7309 curious to see what you guys think
@jonwilkinson7309 - I felt the same, I found a place that has it for $57. May swing by there to grab one...
It was impossible to read this thread and not place an order myself. My go to US online shop (Universal Package Store) had it for $56. Can't wait!
@Rick_M nice. Let me know what you think
Ok, i’m in on this one. Wine and Cheese Place has it for $44.95.
@Rick_M almost. Because mezcal is more mineral-y, the smoke has a different effect. To me, the smoke in this was more impactful. In terms of smoky, Del Bac is to a Ardbeg as mezcal is to a Caol Ila.
@Rick_M it's probably a bit closer to Mezcal vs Islay but it really is unique to itself. It's a real BBQ smoke flavor you get.
@PBMichiganWolverine , @dubz480 - one of the woods used to bake agave for mezcal is mesquite. Would you say the smokiness on this whiskey is similar to mezcal?
@aacharbonneau it's one of their core releases. They also have a classic which is unsmoked and finished in a variety of casks and a distillers cut which is a limited cask strength release that also has varying cask finishing.
Interesting stuff!
@aacharbonneau i think it’s a standard release. But to the point earlier, there’s a revision in branding, but minimal difference.
@dubz480 fortunately they only had the mesquite smoked
We'll, with ba review like that, I might have to go find a bottle. 'Smoky American Malts' sounds like a good theme for my whiskey club next month! Do you know of this is a standard release or is it a limited/seasonal thing?
@Scott_E @PBMichiganWolverine great price and find. Make sure you double check it's the Dorado and not the Classic. Both look super similar! Classic is nice too but the Dorado is where it's at.
@Scott_E $44.99 in AZ
@WhiskeyLonghorn @PBMichiganWolverine your sample was from a 2019 batch. So quality is very good still 😀
I’ve actually seen this available in Northern Colorado but not knowing much about it I’ve only given it a wink and a nod... until next time.
@Scott_E i just paid $47 here in NJ, plus $3 tax. It’s the old pre-branded bottle.
@dubz480 What did you pay? Seems like a win-win and will seek this out.
@PBMichiganWolverine good choices! I recommend a side by side tasting. Great stuff.
@WhiskeyLonghorn Good to know, thanks! i just ordered that and the Colkegan.
@PBMichiganWolverine the shorter, wider one is the older stuff. The taller one in the Distiller page is the new one. In all fairness, I’ve tried both and they’re both good. The older one is a bit more untamed with the bellowing mesquite smoke (my personal preference) and the new one is a little more balanced and nuanced.
@WhiskeyLonghorn which is the bottle from the rebranding ? The taller one with that cactus or the shorter wider one ? My experience has been that whenever one goes from small batch to large scale, something gives. Either quality or cost
@PBMichiganWolverine good point. I got a bottling from 2016, well before this year’s rebranding.
@WhiskeyLonghorn @LeeEvolved if that’s the case, then Lee, I’d buy a bottle sooner than later. My logic is that you just don’t know if the same quality and craftsmanship holds when production is amplified. Maybe, maybe not.
@LeeEvolved I went to a tasting in Austin a few months back with their brand rep. They are just expanding to Texas, and working with distributors to get a more national presence. I think they recently ramped up production and rebranded their core line in anticipation of such a move.
@SolanaRoots in my opinion...yes. And far cheaper.
@PBMichiganWolverine Better than St. George? Seems like a bold call (although I’ve not tried either). This one is definitely intriguing
@LeeEvolved @dubz480 they have distribution here in NYC metro area. Mashandgrape.com has it, as well others. I think they ship to VA
@LeeEvolved it's very easy to find locally and out west. I know they have distro in NYC as well. Let me know when you are ready for your sample pack as I have a sample saved for you. Cheers!
@dubz480 so the question is: how hard is this to get outside of its locale? It sounds like it’s a definite purchase, but can it be found nationwide, or at least regionally?
Fully agree with all the statements. I'd expand that to most new distilleries. I'll have to keep an eye out for this one.
@WhiskeyLonghorn I’ve not had colkegan, but if it’s anything like this, adding to my buy list
Love everything about your review and this single malt. For me it’s a tossup between this one and Colkegan for best VFM and overall quality.
@dubz480 was surprised how damn good this was. Hands down best American single malt
Awesome! sooo happy you agree! It's my favorite American Single Malt hands down! Cheers!
