GlenDronach Boynsmill 16 Year

Ok I've given RB a decent run. Peated Portwood - disjointed and disappointing, Glendronach Forgue 10 year - Average, nothing whiskey, and now this effort. I sadly wept into my glass as I realised the Glendronach I know and love is gone. Yes single casks will still be great and maybe original efforts from BW which are copied should be ok but anything newly blended is a disappointment. Now to be fair it's a small sample and no 5 in duty free and he said others really liked it so maybe I'm not doing it justice. It's not bad but it's no 15 year Revival, no 18 year Allardice etc. It's a shadow of the great masters efforts. Drop everything you are doing, working, feeding your kids, changing a spare tire and run out the door or jump online and stock up on the 18 year and 21 year stock NOW. In a few years time you'll either be thanking me or kicking yourself.

@Slainte-Mhath Yeah but she could do both. Carry on the tradition / standard with the crore range and then do her own thing with one offs. Plus it isn't that she's doing stuff differently, she's just executing poorly. There have been a number of whiskies I don't like the flavour of but I appreciate the BBC (balance, body and complexity) but on at least 1 if not all of the three her efforts are failing.
@Soba45 In all fairness, I think RB's job is an impossible one. If she copies BW, everyone will complain that she is not doing well enough, and if she's going her own way, people are moaning as well. She has big footsteps to fill, so going your own way is probably better that trying to be 'BW Reloaded'.
@Slainte-Mhath Ah damn. I was hoping she could at least get it write copying BW. I'm guessing she's not working with as old stock and needs to make stuff stretch further.. still.
@Soba45 I am afraid your assessment is spot-on. I have tried some of the new RB expressions and was utterly disappointed. The new 15 yo Revival is a joke, I tried it on Saturday and was shocked how far away from the old Revival it is. GlenAllachie caught me interest as well, but on the other hand I am careful when it comes to 'cask finishes'. Keep in mind that most of GlenAllachie's stock was never intended to become a Single Malt, and that cask finishes are all too often used to beaf up a subpar malt. I have the 12 yo GlenAllachie on my review list for October, so we'll see if I like it or not.
@Soba45 - I have tried a sample of the 12yo already. It’s decent, although not overwhelming or up to an old Glendronach 12. I’d say give Billy some time and he’ll get it sorted out. Fingers crossed, too.
@LeeEvolved Nice work. I just got samples of the 12 and 18.
@PBMichiganWolverine - you’re right. The Glenallachie Distillers Company Ltd. is Billy and 2 partners. Let’s just hope they stay silent when it comes to making the bottling decisions lol
@LeeEvolved I don’t know if he’s the sole owner. Maybe. His initial releases sold out really quickly
@PBMichiganWolverine - he is the sole owner of GlenAllachie now. I bought all of the initial releases after the rebrand 10 CS, 12, 18 and 25. They just released some finishing cask versions of an 8, 10 and 12yo- one of which is a rye cask finish. Supposedly, Billy said he was impressed with the stock that was on hand when he took over and there was hope he went through and picked some of the premier casks available for the initial launch. The single cask stuff that’s come out recently is supposedly really good and has some reasonable pricing. I’d say give him some time and he’ll make the place even better.
@PBMichiganWolverine. Right indeed :-). GlenAllachie. I heard his releases were good but not amazing. He did say Glendronach was a once in a lifetime for him in terms of what it produces. His skill sure made the most of it.
@LeeEvolved Yup still a good drop just not at the same level. A decent sampling might see it go higher but I'd be amazed if it blew anyone away.
@LeeEvolved where did BW end up going? Maybe we get that instead ( was it BenRiach? It has to be a distillery where the middle letter is capitalized)
Wow, it’s sad to say that a lot of us saw this coming. Rachel’s track record is like a hurricane warning: get out while you can, lol. I will still buy GD as regularly as I can, I just have to readjust my expectations now and really compare them to other sherried whisky to try and determine the true VFM. I saw this bottle on shelves for the shortest amount of time and when I saw how quickly they sold out I thought she had a winner on her hands. I’ve been scoping auctions for this one, but they haven’t been popping up there either. Good to know it isn’t what it seemed. Cheers, nice review.
