Aberlour 16 Year Double Cask Matured
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland

My experience tasting the Aberlour 16 was akin to putting my ear to a wall and attempting to listen to music being played in the next room at a very modest volume.
Do critics at Rolling Stone or Pitchfork review albums experienced through one ear stuck to a wall? No, they do not. I'll use that as an excuse to be somewhat brief here.
There are some very mild but not unpleasant notes of malt and fruit. But overall, I found the dram to be so muted that the primary characteristics were a thinness, a lack of depth, and nothing that remotely captured my interest.
This was my first Aberlour, but I'm not yet deterred. I have a sample of Casg Annamh on order that I suspect will prove to be more of a heavy hitter. If not, the A'Bunadh will be next.

Yeah they used to be quite good but lost themselves somewhere along the way. I find their stuff seems faded and runs hot and seems immature these days
Excellent review, you summed it up perfectly. This is something of a freak in the Aberlour stable, being so curiously muted. I’ve only tasted it once and it struck me as a completely unnecessary expression. I guess the idea was to make something ultra “smooth” and approachable, but simple dumbing-down is a poor way to achieve that. I quite like both the 12 and 18 year bottlings of Aberlour, but I seldom buy them and I can live without anything else they produce.
Thanks for the review. I’ve been hearing less and less favorable things about Aberlour...
@geologyjane if it’s any consolation, the Abunadh does taste like NyQuil...will bring back memories of being in elementary school, mom spoonfeeding cold medication
Oh man, I have a bottle of the 12 and A’Bunadh. I keep hoping they will grow on me but they haven’t. If anything, the A’Bunadh has improved slightly (not saying much) and the 12 has diminished. I was hoping I might like the 16 or Annamh better but this doesn’t bode well. 😅
@PBMichiganWolverine. in that case, i may stop short of the A'bunadh!
I liked the casg annamh, but wasn’t a fan of a’bunadh. Just felt too imbalanced like cherry NyQuil. I’ve given up on this distillery...sort of like Jura.
