Teeling Distillery Exclusive Chestnut Finish
Single Malt — Ireland

By law Irish whiskey must be subject to maturation for at least three years in wooden casks, such as oak. This leaves some room for experimentation with different types of wood, and Teeling have done just that with this whiskey.
Chestnut, which is more porous than oak, is not all that common but I believe that for this expression Teeling have taken the base spirit of their Small Batch whiskey (a malt and grain blend aged between 4 to 6 years in oak) and applied a chestnut finish for 6 to 12 months. Even more, the chestnut casks previously held PX Brandy.
An interesting concoction but (for me) ultimately a failed experiment. The chestnut is obvious on the nose, along with some maple syrup as others have noted. The taste carries wood spice but I found it too bitter and sour.
Still, it’s good to see them aim for something noteworthy and unique but fall short than try for something blandly popular and succeed.

@1901 Lots of food and literally drinking water continuously every time I had a dram...soooo much water I looked like I was pregnant with water retention by the end...worked though. I felt fine! also 10ml drams not full 30 mills. Still a bottle over the two days... good times :-)
@Soba45 haha you must have hollow legs to fit 80. Last year I "managed" 28.
@1901 Ah nice I can't wait for our dramfest in a few months. 300 different spirits all free to drink (after cover charge) got through 80 last year in 2 days :-)
@Soba45 I didn't know Method & Madness did one. I'm going to WhiskeyLive this weekend so I might track down a taste to see what it's like
Ah interesting. I have a bottle of Midletons Method and Madness also chestnut finished which is very interesting and by the sounds of it a lot nicer than this one!
