After driving off the ferry to the top of the South Island into the Marlborough region we started picking cherries, then onto a vineyard lunch with wine and an unusual desert. Gin and Tonic sorbet. They used a local gin, Roots Gin. It was damn nice. Soon after with a Champagne interlude in another vineyard I ended up next to the place where this was distilled and tried a 3 flight of gin of which this was one of them.
Batch distilled in a boutique 200L copper pot still after a 24 hour activated maceration. Produced on estate at the Elemental Distillery, in the heart of the Marlborough wine region.
Ingredients as follows:
Juniper, wild foraged (Highlands, Macedonia)
Grapefruit ‘Golden Special’ (Gisborne, NZ)
Coriander seed (Hawke's Bay, NZ)
Motueka hops, organic (Nelson, NZ)
Gorse flower, wild foraged (Volunteers, Marlborough, NZ)
Kawakawa berries, wild foraged (Kaikoura, NZ)
I think it was the grapefruit and hops combo with a slice of lemon that nailed it for me. I also love East Imperial Grapefruit tonic (NZ made) with a good gin. Will have to get a bottle and match them up!
Update: I ordered a bottle from the distiller along with bitters they make. The gin is really very nice straight. I'd say this would be my second go to after Method and Madness
Update 2. After my wife and I demolished a bottle in no time at all (and she didn't like gin that much before hand and didn't like Method and Madness) I'd have to say this is tops but would love to try head to head!
