Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland

A step down in price from the 21 year but still a damn nice drop. Reminds me of a CS less complex Bunnahabhain 18 in a way. Similar raiseny sherry profile. Great value at $65USD a bottle. Doesn't even need a drop of water.

@cascode Haha, nice! Sounds like she aligns with my tastes exactly when it comes to sherried whiskey. @dhsilv2 no even a sample would be too rich for my blood!
@dhsilv2 No mate, out of my comfort zone for experimentation. I save that sort of money for Springbank or the SMWS outturns.
@cascode very good story and I can't say it's wrong. You know and I don't have a review here and it's been a WHILE but I recall the 10 year being a lot more not bad than the 12. But again that was a while ago. Anyone had the 30 year? 600 bucks....kinda debating it in my head.
@Ctrexman & @Soba45 & @dhsilv2 When we did the distillery tasting tour (with chocolate matching, drool) we were fed the 12, 15, 18 and 21 year old expressions. I didn't mind them all, although I thought the 12 was a bit brash and the 15 just OK. 18 is where it started to happen for me. Mrs Cascode hated everything passionately and handed me her unfinished tasting drams until the 21 appeared, at which point she went into some sort of trance or religious epiphany, and declared Glengoyne her favourite distillery.
@sobas45 given where I bought my 25 year, that bottle/box were likely sitting on the "shelf" for years and years. But I dunno when my normal store sold out of the 18, they haven't replaced it in the last year (it's one of the largest stores in america..like top 10). I had to get my 18 at a total wine a few hours away. So not sure what the story is, but I'm sure this bottle is 2-5 years old.
@dhsilv2 Eh that is odd. First time I've ever heard that happening. Another weird thing is the 18 appears to be now sold out here which is a first (other than one stupidly priced retailer). Maybe they are introducing new stock soon at a higher abv and no doubt price which could explain your mix up?
250 for the 25? I paid freaking 375 and frankly I think it's a reasonable value!
25 year that is
@sobas45 well get this. My box says on the back it is bottled at 43% and then the bottle says 48%, lol.
@dhsilv2 Yeah the 25 year is more than twice the price here. $120USD for the 21 and over $250 for the 25!
@dhsilv2 Oh and the 18 is promoted as 'a generous proportion of first-fill sherry casks' so maybe that was the one you were thinking of? Weird they don't say exclusive first fill explicitly for the 21 and 25 so not sure if MoM are correct or not but it sure tastes like they are!
@sobas45 well you have me drooling if it's the same quality european oak and first fill as MoM says vs the 25 as the 21 is WAY less expensive and frankly I didn't get anything on the 25 that made me think "wow this is old". I mean it tastes old for sure but just not super old.
@dhsilv2 Yeah all they say is hand selected casks but MoM and others say first fill sherry. Ah true I forgot about the refill boubon for the younger age statements.
@Soba45 interesting, reading the 21 I thought their claim was that used a lot of first fill, not that it was all first fill. It is I think the first one that's ALL sherry cask. I for some reason really don't like their malt when it has bourbon on it. I have a 25 at home, easily the definative example of first fill european oak sherry. Just wish we had a 21 anywhere near me...I've driven nearly everything in an hour and a half radious with that on my list.
@dhsilv2 Yeah the 12, 15 and 18 are either refill or mixture. 21 25 and this are first fill.... something I'm very keen on. I'd say anyone wanting to go entry level(ish) on this on try the cask strength (you can always water down so even better vfm). I've heard good things about the legacy one as well.
Interesting to hear others who found the 12 and 15 pretty darn underwhelming. The 18 I have is decent stuff, still tastes like tired casks and too much bourbon casking. I need to try the 21. A brand so known for sherry casks...you'd think they'd have more exclusive sherry cask bottles.
@worldwhiskies95 Nice. I had a 1996 21 year Small Batch (WM Cadenhead) which was on par with the 21. Its a great distillery
Have the 25 year at home and it is amazing. Also tried a 17 year single cask number 844 in Bar Lebensstern in Berlin and that was amazing too. The 10 year tastes similar to Macallan 12 Double Cask.
Im sure it would.......Im slowly building up the pricing ladder to make sure I can appreciate the cost difference
@Ctrexman It could have been an oxidized bottle or something but @LeeEvolved felt similar (and we had exact same score). All I'll say if you liked the 12 the 21 will blow your socks off :-)
well my bad I liked the 12 ( especially at $29closeout) but then again Im a Mac fanboy
@Ctrexman The 12 year was terrible and I don't believe their 15 yr is much too write home about either. 21 is a very nice drop as is this one. I have a legacy series one and 25 year to review sometime as well
Anything compared to Bunna I know I will like
