Buffalo Trace Bourbon

I've got several new bottles to open and try, but my palate just seems "off" the last couple weeks. Whether it's my mood (which has been relatively foul), sinuses/allergies (with this wacky weather half my property is in bloom), or my brief fascination with Vodka Cranberries (don't judge) I have been afraid to try anything new until stuff I've already tried tastes right to me again. I did promise myself that I would re-visit some of my earliest reviews now that I have some experience under my belt and this was one I had ready to go at the end of 2019. So, here goes...
NOSE: Fairly Simple and Straightforward. A little Heat from the alcohol, but when that dissipates, it smells like a bourbon should. Caramel, Vanilla, Leather, Oak, a Hint of Soft Pink Bubblegum, maybe a Little Citrus and Floral. After some time, Dried Apricot or Peach. Haha...Okay. Maybe it's not as simple as I first thought.
NEAT: Sweet. That Pink Bubblegum note is front and center. Vanilla, Light Astringent Oak, Sweet Tea, and Leather. Finishes with a Medium Kentucky Hug with light Vanilla and Wood coating the palate. Not as much going on here as the nose would lead you to believe, but solid nonetheless.
SPLASH: Gives the nose a Peppery quality. Seems to accentuate the rye notes. Makes the palate even sweeter by showcasing the Vanilla notes.
VERDICT: I really like BT products and usually pick them up on the rare occasion that I find them, but apparently I need to enjoy them more. What led me to re-visit this one was opening my closet and finding 5 unopened bottles of BT that I have purchased over the last 3 or 4 years. One at a time on the rare occasion that my ABC store guy emails to let me know he got a few bottles. In that time, I don't know if I've drank a drop. Bought, put away and never thought about again. What am I doing? It's Buffalo Trace for God's sake, not some Van Winkle unicorn. It's a bit overpriced at $30 (especially considering Eagle Rare has made a comeback around here and is only a few dollars more), but it's on par with other distilleries base/mid-range offerings (WT101, Maker's, Elijah Craig, 4 Roses Small Batch, etc). New Year's Resolution #10? Drink more Buffalo this year!

I'm convinced now more than ever people are over rating this simply because it comes from the same place as Stagg, Eagle Rare and Col Taylor. Much like green label Weller, it's just not even close.
For what its worth I find eating some mexican food then having a pour some time later does wonders for the palate. Something about the spices heightens my ability to pick out flavors. Ymmv
@BDanner Right there with you. Tough getting time just to find some time to just sip (considering I only drink on weekends). Also been fighting a head cold and haven’t been in a sipping mood. Maybe it’s this winter weather weirdness.
@BDanner - ah that makes sense, I’ve been there before. I hear ‘weeds, pollen, or grass’ and I associate it with terrible hay fever. If only whisk(e)y was covered by HSAs....
Buffalo Trace represents the most expensive (and probably best) bourbon that I would pour Luxardo maraschino into.
@1901 Exactly! Reminds me of the meme that's been floating around for a while. "The Doctor says I should drink more whiskey. Also, I'm calling myself the doctor now."
@geologyjane Thanks! I've been meaning to get back on here and post some reviews I've got pile up, but time has been very stretched recently. As for the palate thing, I don't feel bad or anything, but I've been drinking pours that I normally like or love and they all taste "off". It's very frustrating.
At last a resolution that could be easy to keep!
@PBMichiganWolverine here as well. On the coast, our grass goes dormant in the winter but it was looking like I might have to mow. But back in the 20’s last night, so...
@BDanner so it’s just not here in NJ with the wacky weather ( 70 one day, 33 the next)...NC too?
@BDanner - good to see you posting again, and here’s to wishing you some speedy relief!
