I’m NOT a rum expert but think this is a little syrupy sweet and not nearly as complex as the Plantation XO 20th Anniversary, which is similarly rated but a bit more expensive. There are sweet banana and muted spice flavors but this is clearly a more subtle blend. I think Plantation XO’s finishing in France at Cognac Ferrand, in new French Oak barrels for another 12-18 months adds a finesse that’s missing in this. Judged by itself for around $8 less, I think this Diplomatico is good and worth buying (if more muted) but the Plantation XO 20th Anniversary is on another level.
