I figured I’ll play along and insert this wood stave given with the bottle into the gin and see how it progresses over time.
Hypothesis: I think the gin will significantly improve over time with the quality Cedar stave inserted.
Experiment: once a month, conduct a taste test by a having a few sips. Do it till the bottle finishes or I spit out the sips...whichever comes first.
So:
week 0, Feb 5 2020: pre-stave insertion:
Typical gin flavor —London dry gin. Not bad, but meh.

@geologyjane so I got this for free when I bought an advent calendar. After new year’s, the “premium” advent whiskey calendar was reduced to $150, and they included a free 24 yr That Boutiquey Bourbon and this. Not a bad purchase. And the premium pours in the advent are pretty good: balvenie 21 Portwood, 30 yr Tomintoul, 21 yr Glenlivet, Jura 21, and others Next measurement: end of Feb. will be interesting to see color and taste.
@PBMichiganWolverine - haha this is a neat idea, I’ve only ever seen those cheap absorbent sticks they sell at grocery stores they say they make your wine or whiskey more “smooth”. No idea what they’re made of but I can’t say I have any interest in those. Where did you find this set and when is your next check-in tasting?
Where’s my fellow scientist @geologyjane ...could’ve used her in constructing this experiment ☺️
I actually got this one free by buying something else. I think it’ll be a fun little experiment running it through for a few months.
Although if the hypothesis is right in the end then I'm guess I'll be wrong..very interesting concept!
I was about to buy their xmas pack but then thought hmm not sure about the quality of their gin runs as seems quite rushed to meet the regular xmas deadlines. looks like I was right!
