It has been that way with most bourbons I've tried. Something like W.L. Weller however I found rather damn pleasant after a few drops of water. Possibly because of it's wheat grain nature.
Is it because you struggle with ALL bourbons, or just this one? I don't find this remarkably sharp compared to other bourbons, but definitely sharper than Irish and scotch.
