Ledaig 13 Amontillado Cask Finish

Single Malt — Islands, Scotland

Reviewed February 11, 2020 (edited November 6, 2020)
4.75
4.75 out of 5 stars
Just opened the bottle I got at Deanston (sister distillery) and as promised came with this (express) review: “O M G !!! Caramelised apple, smoked bacon, “funkiness” and a salty edge... Weird? I freaking ❤️ it! (Disclaimer: not for the faint of heart)” It is indeed so weird that it keeps it 1/4 point apart from the perfect score... It’s not your every day dram, nor will you always be on the mood for it, but when you are, it sure is one hell of a ride!

Amontillado is an unusual finish. I'm glad it worked out :)

@Generously_Paul the Ardbeg Kelpie is a wise choice for Islay. It’s not as in your face

@Slainte-Mhath I think the Macallan will fill that role well enough. Again, the majority of those attending won’t know the difference. I hope to get some video of the whole thing and throw it up on Dapper Drams. Still about a month out though

@Generously_Paul Not a bad choice for the whisky flight. No sherry monster in the selection?

@AntonioSchmid it’s the standard release, not the CE version, but yes I wanted to ease them into each region, then smack them all in the face with Islay (short of wasting an Octomore on a bunch of noobs)

@Generously_Paul Kelpie? That’s a very special treat indeed! In an Ardbeg meets Talisker kind of way... Hope they enjoy the Black Sea Oak. Not an “easy” whisky, just like this Ledaig.

@AntonioSchmid yeah it’s still a month away and I’m furiously writing down notes for what I’m going to talk about. I’m basically doing an information dump and then I’ll have to organize it and try to keep it from being too long and boring. Final bottle selection is Auchentoshan American Oak, Dalwhinnie 15, HP 12, Springbank 10, Macallan 12 Double Cask and Ardbeg Kelpie

@Generously_Paul Oh yes! I think I read something about it here and on Distiller’s Facebook group. Your friends will have a blast! 🥃😁👍🏼

@AntonioSchmid still no 😕. It’s on the short list, but unfortunately the short list just got longer since I’m about to open 6 bottles for a tasting party.
