Lagavulin Offerman Edition 11 Year

Steadily working my way through the pile @LeeEvolved sent over. The last Lagavullin dram I had was a month or so ago now. 9 yr Game of Thrones - House Bannister. I think I preferred that one. It was richer in the style of the 16 with more oomph. This profile is a sharper more acidic peat which I'm not a huge fan of. I had another side taste of the Ardbeg Galileo and my preference also lies there. Decent drop but not one for me.

@BDanner Ouch. you can still get it here for under $80 or even less on special!
@Generously_Paul @PBMichiganWolverine - well, the Virginia ABC website shows they have the Offerman, but I’m guessing it’s all at scotch-sentric locations around the swankier parts of the state. None in the 6-7 shops within 20 miles of me. They’re asking $100 a bottle, too. That’s about $30-40 too much IMHO.
@jonwilkinson7309 likewise, except in mine, just a few of the boxes are on the shelf—-my home office gets a lot of sunlight, so afraid if oxidation
@PBMichiganWolverine. Although I'm well behind you in the number of bottles, my consumption to collection ratio has put me on a similar track. I do keep a lot of my bottles displayed on shelves. That way, I can at least enjoy looking at the many that I have yet to open.
@jonwilkinson7309 good thing I’ve hoarded 600+ bottles (totally unplanned...just sheer practice of little drinking )
@Generously_Paul. It makes no sense at all. Which is why the first round of tariffs have accomplished exactly nothing, leading to the outrageous 100% proposal.
@Richard-ModernDrinking Woah that's crazy..between Brexit, Trumps brand of trade, the situation in Hong Kong, Turkey vs Russia, Coronovirus and everything else going on going to be a very very interesting 2020 for both whiskey supplies and everything else ...
@Richard-ModernDrinking and all of this nonsense over government subsidies to aircraft manufacturers. Explain to anyone how that makes sense.
According to my local bar owner in New York, the distributors are hoarding supplies of Scotch currently in case Trump follows through on his threat to raise tariffs to 100%. He is running low on Laphroaig!
@Generously_Paul it’s the polar opposite here in NJ. I’m seeing readily available—except now with a bit of markup
@LeeEvolved if it hasn’t arrived by now it never will. This was a very limited edition. I asked my local store to order 3 for me...they could only get one
@BDanner I’ve not checked the 16 here recently. I’d not be surprised if it jumps up as well.
@PBMichiganWolverine the 16 just took a $20 jump here (from $100 to $120). If the Offerman Edition even made it here, it was gone before I saw one. And I was on constant lookout.
I liked this one as well, was fruitier for me than the 16. @LeeEvolved this has now climbed up the price from $55 here in NJ to well over $70.
@LeeEvolved And that is what makes the world of whiskey and indeed the whole world such a fascinating place... catering for a wide range of preferences :-)
@Soba45 - I think I’m exactly on the opposite side- I love the salty, dry and bitter peat bombs with a passion, and only like the deeper and richer, variety finishing casks as a change of pace (I’ve had some damn fine ones, don’t get me wrong, but I love a standard Laphroaig/Ardbeg/Caol Ila dram the most. Of course, if you ask me again in 3 months, it could change. Lol
@LeeEvolved Yeah I find that with Ardbeg and Lagavullin they do two different styles of dram (at a really high level). Category 1 which I love - Rich, deep and dark vs Category 2: in which I lump those that are a combination of stringent/thinner/acidic/lemony type peat. I'm just really not a huge fan of the latter.
This one got better for me as I drank through the bottle. I wasn’t impressed at all when I first opened it. This bottle was a gift from @Generously_Paul. I’m not sure it’s even hit shelves here in Virginia.
