There’s Brora, and then there’s rest of all whiskey. There’s Porsche, and then there’s rest of all cars. There’s Caroni...and then there’s rest of all other rum.
I got a pour of this generously from @ScotchingHard. After the week we’re going through, I wanted to open up a closed distillery, just in case we don’t make it beyond a few weeks—-thanks to CV19. But more realistically, This week has been especially tough—-I’m heading up our corporate CV19 task force. Fifteen hour days of managing chaos, so wanted to open up this sample of a closed rarity.
What’s unique about this is that it’s fully matured in Trinidad—-so imagine the evaporation rate in the climate ! But despite it, it doesn’t taste like you’re licking a piece of oak. There’s a certain funk to it—like the smell of diesel fuel in a chocolate factory . In a good way. Taste—-almond skins, raisins, cocoa. Is this rum??
Needless to say—this is a rarity, and even if I tasted this blind, it would still be a 4.5-5 star drink. Furthermore—-I’d have guessed Springbank...not a rum.
Thanks @ScotchingHard...and a special cheers for you, since you’re probably facing the front lines of CV19 there in the ER or hospital

Caroni by Velier (italian bottler) is like a Ferrari ... all produced at home, with the exception of glass and label, such as brakes and tires ...
@PBMichiganWolverine Yeah lucky Congress didn't allow him to cut the budgets of all the rest of the US health institutions..if there is one good thing that needs to come out of this it's a) Biden needs to stay alive b) He needs to beat Trump!
@Soba45 our testing is lagging, compared to other countries. We were extremely poorly prepared, especially considering we were not the first hit—-rather it was China, Japan and SKorea, so that should’ve given us enough time to prepare and get our act together. Our leader(s) aren’t really crisis managers...
@PBMichiganWolverine @ScotchingHard Good luck. NZ has just announced ANYONE entering the borders from Monday must self quarantine for 14 even NZ citizens...mass panic with overseas nz citizens trying to get back by Sunday midnight. Also banning of mass gatherings coming up soon..just got Dramfest in in time but my sister's wedding is next week and all the international guests are stuffed including 2 best men from Germany and New York a bridesmaid and others. The NZ sharemarket is going to get destroyed tomorrow...waaaay worse than GFC 2008. 100% worldwide recession coming up. Feel sorry for you guys in the USA with Trump ballsing things up by cutting the CDC funding and other programs, also read per head you guys thanks to his efforts testing wise are one of the worst per head in the world and people until last week were desperately trying to get tested but having a very tough time.
@ScotchingHard My sister was an ER nurse and from the stories I've heard I'd stay well away unless critical at this point! Good luck!
@ScotchingHard you must be going utterly bonkers...between the hypochondriacs and the real cases.
@jonwilkinson7309 if a vaccine is found to work, by the time phase III is done, it would be 12-18 months. ( my first job out of college was at pfizer in clinical studies ). I think we botched the onset here in the US...
Thanks for the special cheers! Glad you enjoyed this. I think I liked your sample better, slightly. But my favorite Caroni was a Cadenhead I had in San Fran. I wish these were as available in the US as in Europe. I’m in the ER dealing with more panic than sick people. If everyone could just drink something nice and relax...
Great review. I have yet to spring for a Caroni, but you've inspired me to do so. Crazy times indeed! Best of luck with the Covid-19 efforts. As bad as this week was, I have some optimism. I work for a company that's doing clinical trials for vaccines and treatments. If we can just slow the spread...
