SHIN 15 Year Mizunara Oak Finish
Blended Malt — Japan

Nose - plum, brandy, port wine, nutmeg, stewed pear, rum chocolate, caramel, hazelnut, mild ethanol burn.
Taste - caramel, black pepper, plum, black cherry, nutmeg, rich chocolate, green spicy wood, moderate alcohol burn, finishing reasonably long with lingering spicy chocolate wordiness.
Surprisingly complex for a Japanese whiskey. I find the wood flavor very interesting. Nothing like American oak; the mizunara imparts a spiciness that is really pleasant and interesting.

Ah interesting @dubz480 , I didn't realize you'd tried both. What is it you prefer about the 10? Is it more complex? I'll probably go for the 10 yo first whenever I do get a bottle since it's cheaper.
@ContemplativeFox people are right to be skeptical of any new Japanese Whisky, but ultimately if it tastes good who cares! Personally I prefer the 10yr to the 15yr as a side note.
You have a good point about sourcing @ctbeck11 . I checked the TW website and there are a fair number of reviews hating on it for sourcing the distillate. I can't say I personally care that much because Japanese whisky is mainly known for the mizunara, not its use of distinctive local grains or anything like that.
I've been wondering the same thing @ctbeck11 . I see numerous bottles taking up multiple slots on the shelf every time I go in. Japanese whisky tends to be overpriced and this does look like a store brand, but the age statement catches my attention every time. Given that you and @dubz480 have left quite positive reviews for the two ages, I'm surprised that there haven't been at least a few more people who've pulled the trigger on it.
@ContemplativeFox Agreed. I’m surprised I haven’t seen more reviews here on this one, since I created the record earlier this year. I see this prominently displayed in Total Wine every time I visit. I wonder if it’s only regionally available. Or possibly many are unwilling to drop $100 on what appears to be a fairly new brand, even given it’s a 15 year old Japanese whisky (although it’s almost certainly sourced).
Great to hear that the mizunara is very present, but doesn't overwhelm the complexity! Sounds like a solid VFM - a rarity among Japanese whisky these days :)
