If anything should happen to me…
If I should shuffle off this mortal coil...
Lay me to rest with this one. Place it in my casket. It’s a new favourite.
(Better put Lagavulin 16 in there as well)
Please play The Bee Gees’ Staying Alive during the service – that should raise an eyebrow or a smirk.
But most of all: Cry noisily. Wail and shout. Crumple to your knees as I’m lowered into the clay. Tell them I was one of a kind.

Additional notes: My notes on this were very similar to my notes for the award winning 24 Year Old. Nose of sweet fruits: peach, raspberry, blackcurrant, mango. I even got a bit of a throwback scent of Buckfast tonic wine in there – stay classy 1901. The taste was as dry, dusty, and oaky as your grandmother’s parlour. The room she only let the important people into, like the parish priest or visiting relatives home from America. Slightly tannic and salty, but it doesn’t have the hint of acidic peat that the 24yo had. But as it develops it bursts into a rainbow of gummy fruits with peach and mango to the fore. Wonderful!
Before everyone goes crazy, there are some hoops to jump through before signing up online. You can email me if you need details.
@PBMichiganWolverine Let me email you
@Soba45 maybe it’s like working in McDonald’s while in high school. Once you see all those French fries up close and in so much volume, it keeps you away for life.
@Richard-ModernDrinking i just signed up...and paid for that Springbank event!
@PBMichiganWolverine the thought briefly crossed my mind but I thought i'm trying to drink less not more so that definitely wouldn't help!
@Soba45 i think you should petition them to have you run the NZ chapter.
@Soba45 Drammer’s Club. We have international chapters but obviously they’re not very active now. We’ve been spoilt with virtual tastings in New York.
@Richard-ModernDrinking Whats the name of the club? I wouldn't mind looking them up if they have a website or blog so I can gaze enviously at the backlog of great drams you have got to try!
@Richard-ModernDrinking Wow that's crazy great pricing. Ah yes that's the type of tasting I do like going to when u have someone from the actual distillery or knowledgeable about what's gone on to create the dram
@Soba45 Typically our tastings cost $100 but this one is $65 as I think Teeling is kicking in some of the bottles. There’s always a distillery rep or two so the conversation tends to be more technical than sensorial - I always learn a lot.
@Richard-ModernDrinking a mouthwatering list for sure and most of which i haven’t had so let me know how it goes. I imagine the older stuff will hold up very well but I’d be particularly interested in your take on their own distillate in the Pot Still. I was eyeing that up since it was first released but i saw mixed reviews and held off.
@Richard-ModernDrinking Wow wish I had a club like that here that's some great stuff! Out of interest mind asking what they would charge for a session like that?Although definitely with @PBMichiganWolverine in that I really couldn't be arsed hanging around listen to people drone on about all the flavours they are tasting. We have a tasting session one of our local retailers runs however bar the occasional single cask tasting of Glendronach and Benriach doesn't reach the dizzing heights offering wise of what yours serve up. I really can't be arsed hanging out for 3 hrs to snip and slowly sip several drams though so i very rarely attend these days.
@Richard-ModernDrinking NICE! I should then look into joining...I can put them on mute and read a book.
@PBMichiganWolverine No-one will notice if you’re not paying attention to the three-hour Zoom session ;)
@Richard-ModernDrinking for that club, do I have to interact with people and have to listen to what it taste like for them? Or can one just have it on his/her own while watching Netflix or reading a book? Yeah...I’m so built for quarantine...
@1901 As follows. Think I signed up for set B; the club has only one bottle of each of the rarer ones so not enough of everything for everyone: * 24yo Teeling Single Malt - Vintage Reserve Collection, 2016 bottling (SET A ONLY). * 21yo Teeling Vintage Reserve "Silver Bottling", Batch No. 3 (SET B ONLY). * Teeling The Revival, Vol. 1 - 15yo Whiskey matured in ex-Rum Barrels (SET B ONLY). * Teeling - The Revival, Vol. III - 14yo Finished in Pineau des Charentes Barrels (SET A ONLY). * Teeling - The Revival, Vol. IV - 15yo Matured in Muscat Barrels (SET B ONLY). * A.D. Rattray Single Malt / Single Cask 10yo Release from Cooley Distillery (SET A ONLY). * Teeling Single Cask ex-Carcavelos Port Cask (2016, BOTH SET A and SET B). * Teeling Single Cask 13yo Chestnut Cask (BOTH SET A and SET B). * Teeling Single Pot Still (BOTH SET A and SET B). * Teeling Small Batch Irish Whiskey Ex-Rum Finish (BOTH SET A and SET B).
@Richard-ModernDrinking please do, I’d be interested to hear. What’s on the menu?
This has wetted my appetite for the flight of older Teeling samples coming my way for a virtual tasting at the weekend. I’ll report back.
@PBMichiganWolverine yes, that’s it. For older stock as @Soba45 says you are really looking at those 3. If it’s an old single malt it’s likely to be Cooley or Bushmills.
@PBMichiganWolverine For older stock yes. There were at one point another 40 something being built and or already operational. Teeling has their own in Dublin (sadly not great stuff!)
@1901 interesting—-so, practically, is it just two distilleries then in IRL? Bushmills and Cooley? All others are sourced from one of these two. Oh...and I guess 3–Jameson / Midleton.
@PBMichiganWolverine The Teeling distillery isn't open that long and most releases originate from Cooley or Bushmills but the source hasn’t been revealed. The Cooley Distillery was formerly owned by John Teeling and stocks were secured during the sale of Cooley to Beam Suntory, making it very likely that it is Cooley distilled. The story goes that the Teeling sons, who run the Teeling distillery, managed to negotiate the acquisition of a large amount of quality aged casks of whiskey during the sale. BTW Following the buyout Old John Teeling went and set up a new distillery called the Great Northern Distillery and they specialise in producing spirit for other brands and distilleries - a bit like the Irish version of MGP.
@1901 any idea if this is a Teeling distilled ( do they distill their own?) or sourced?
Additional info: The family tree of this one is interesting. It is the continuation of the original lightly peated Teeling 21 Silver Reserve, which became the World’s Best Single Malt Teeling 24, now this 28 year old released with 4 years extra sauternes cask maturation. All three expressions come from the same batch of 1991 distillate that has spent about 20 years in ex-bourbon barrels before being finished for the past 7-8 years in sauternes wine casks.
@1901 👏😊
@PBMichiganWolverine you’ve convinced me! I don’t know why I stingily held back 0.25. Corrected now 😀
I’m envious. This is a dream dram. ( not 5 stars??!)
