What is the purpose of vodka? In Soviet Russia, vodka drinks you, but here, it mostly seems that vodka exists to make things alcoholic, which is not a bad purpose in life, but perhaps a puzzling one to a whisky drinker such as myself.
This particular bottle is available everywhere, but happens to be made in my hometown of Austin, Texas. They have huge billboards along the highway and it’s plugged at every bar in town. It was the first legal distillery in Texas since prohibition, paving the way for all the fine Texas whisky we enjoy now. That makes it at least worth a look.
The nose gives off...well...alcohol. And nothing. The palate is soft and dusty. No burn. That’s about it. This was never intended to be consumed neat. I bought it because I’ve been mixing cocktails in our extended Covid lockdown to keep myself and the wife entertained. I’m particularly excited to see how my “infusion” turns out. After tasting this I stuffed a few chili peppers in the bottle in the hopes of spicy Bloody Marys and Spicy Moscow Mules. Results TBD.
To that end, no rating. Just a story and some experimentation and trying to broaden the palate beyond whisky (though plenty of whisky is being consumed too). Cheers!

@mblosser007 made some damn fine Mules and Bloody Marys!
How’s that infusion turn out?
@BDanner yezir, nice and fresh. Sipping on a Wild Turkey 101 with Peligrino and some Swiss chocolate (85% cacao) right now. 🥃
@spacemoth77 The infusion? Glad you liked it.
@BDanner tried this on yer recommendation, loved it... great fresh taste. 🙂
@jonwilkinson7309 Jack Daniels, the height of luxury!
@Ctrexman ...and speaking of potatoes, we have a local craft vodka made from surplus NC Sweet Potatoes that is very good. We also have one distilled from rice that is very good as well. About the only way to give a vodka character is the base it’s distilled from.
@Ctrexman I’d much rather have a brown liquor or gin, but sometimes a good quality vodka from the freezer poured over the rocks hits the spot.
@WhiskeyLonghorn the cucumbers balance the heat very nicely.
@jonwilkinson7309 that’s too bad. And since you’re in a co from state they won’t even lower the price to reflect decreased sales?
@BDanner what a lovely suggestion. I used a jalapeño and a habanero pepper. So far the results are positive after about 36 hours. I spent a lot of time in New Mexico and acquired an affinity for spicy things. If this falls on its face, I’ll try your suggestion next!
Nice review and I agree. I gave a bottle away to our house builders yesterday as me and my wife really didn't know what to do with it. Not a mixer or cocktail person and if i did have a mixer it needs to be something where the spirit has more flavor and actually adds something rather than ethanol. Gin and Tonic I like but thats about my limit with mixers!
Interestingly, my wife made herself a cocktail this evening with Reyka Vodka using a 50cl sample we got while traveling last summer. She left me just enough to try a sip. My reaction was exactly the same - ethenol. Nothing more, nothing less. The drink she made (from a cocktail book) called for pineapple juice, lime juice and vodka. For the life of me, I can't understand why that drink wouldn't be better with rum. Or tequila. Tito's may be local to you, but it's a huge seller here in New Hampshire. I few months ago, I went into our state liquor store to buy a bottle of Twisted Tattoo. The cashier looked at the bottle and said, "Not many people buy Scotch here." "But you must sell a lot of Johnnie Walker and Dewers", I replied. "No," she said, "For spirits, it's mostly Jack Daniels and Tito's."
Not a vodka guy at all.........though i have thought some quality potato vodka neat might be ok
Thin sliced cucumbers and a halved jalapeño infused 24 hours in vodka or gin really spices up Bloody Mary’s, vodka/gin & tonics, and dirty martinis.
