Rich vanilla, baking spice, barrel spice, and barrel funk on the nose.
This is a deep, robust, full bodied whiskey. It has a strong interplay between earthy and sweet. I get a lot of rye spice, damp earth - almost mushrooms, barrel, vanilla, tobacco, smoke, as well as oak spice, cream, and baked apple.
The finish is very long and is dominated by apple, oak spice, wood, leather, and tobacco. I think that I might also be picking up some roasted marshmallow.
It has a lot of sharp flavors that have been mellowed and married together, to create a whiskey with lots of strong distinct flavors that are ultimately very balanced, but still easy to pull apart.
The sweet flavors are very well balanced and contrasted to the barrel and earthy elements.

that barrel funk and the smokey cloves might throw folks off. I agree it had so many layers, but didnt take a scientist to pull them apart.
@Spamin76 thanks for your perspective. I too am more of a scotch drinker, but I’ve come to love the Wild Turkey profile above most other bourbons. I’ve been looking for a “special occasion” bottle of bourbon beyond a daily supper. Your thoughts have been helpful. Cheers and enjoy your bottle!
@WhiskeyLonghorn, I always keep a bottle of Rare Breed on hand, if that helps. I'm more of a scotch drinker, but RB is one of my go to bourbons.
@WhiskeyLonghorn, that's a hard question to answer. I've had probably hundreds of different whiskeys now, so I've been around the whiskey block again and again. In all that experience, I've gotten a lot of experience picking out flavors and scents. If you drink just to enjoy it, to unwind after a long day while you're doing something else, or you just want to sit and spend some time with friends or family, you can get a perfect bottle for $30-60 bucks. You aren't going to be let down. But if you want to sit down with your whiskey for 30 minutes and just enjoy the way it smells, and then spend the next 2 hours getting everything out of your pour, then a bottle like this is absolutely worth it. Do you want to have a drink and enjoy it, or do you want to explore whiskey and figure out everything whiskey can do and be? About half the bottles I spend more than $100 on, I wouldn't rebuy if I had the opportunity. They're never bad, but a lot of times, I'll buy a more expensive bottle and say, I'd buy this again if it was $80, but not at $120. This one, and the last WT Master's Keep(The Cornerstone Rye), I'd buy again, but not the one before that(the Revival). I also probably wouldn't go out of my way to buy a special edition from a distillery I didn't already love.
Nice review. I’ve often looked at these Masters Keep editions and wondered if they’re worth the higher price when 101 and RB are so affordable. You think this was worth $175?
