Loch Lomond 12 Year

The aromas and flavors seem akin to JW Black, but fuller and stronger, and with a peatier backbone. No water's needed and it's quite quaffable at an ABV of 46%. Priced at $35 USD, this is a commendable VFM that competently showcases a medium peated bourbon-cask profile. At similar price points, the Loch Lomond 12 proves to be a scrupulous SM alternative to the blended JW Double Black -- but with an extra bump in alcohol content. Thank you @Ctrexman for the recommendation. Worth a re-buy for daily zipping.

@DigitalArc I haven’t tried either but do have them in my collection, awaiting their turns haha. I’ll definitely do a side-by-side when I do try them. I HAVE heard from reliable sources that the coffee grain is very reminiscent of bourbon flavors, so I’m intrigued. If you get to either before I do, I would love to get your thoughts.
@Anthology Wonderful review on the Nikka, so packed with info. Have you tried the Nikka Coffee Grain or the Coffee Malt? If so, how do they stack up against each other?
@Anthology You can re-post here and no one'll hate. I'm guilty of re-writing reviews after my impressions have changed, letting my initial observations stand in the memory of others.
@CKarmios Right, sometimes I don't heed my own advice. I'll seriously compliment a bottle in a tasting, then never think about it again - only to move onto another in my whiskey journey. But I've got a feeling I may re-buy this once annually. Not as smooth as a blend, but very drinkable at 46%.
Nice review! Completely agree with your notes as they’re very reflective of my experience with this dram. Also aligned with your vfm PoV. I was pleasantly surprised by [the balance of] this pour given that I got mine [1 liter bottle] at Heathrow dutyfree to serve as a palate-builder...so wasn’t holding out much hope for a great dram. I’ve been known to diss 1 liter-sized dutyfree bottles (check my review of Nikka From the Barrel)...so it felt like eating my own words when I finally cracked this open after collecting dust on my shelf for over 4 years! Prolly why I haven’t dropped my review on it yet haha. Who wants to contradict themselves eh? But I will. I promise. Good news with whiskey tastes is you can always change your mind.
Back in the day, I used to enjoy the JW Black, neat or with a single cube of ice. Then, either my tastes changed or the Black did. More recently I discovered the Double Black and thought, yes, this takes me back. Now you’re saying Loch Lomond ups the Double Black’s game. I am intrigued.
Nice review......yes im a fan of this malt
