I bought this not expecting much other than just being curious if the pecan staves actually added something unique to the bourbon.
The nose is really great! Not super strong, but I get notes of caramel, nuttiness, and some oak. Really a fan of the nose.
The palate is pretty dynamic actually! It starts out with a classic bourbon taste, and I am surprised that there is definitely a pecan note in this! It’s got a really rich nutty-ness to it. Other initial notes are caramel, brown sugar, vanilla etc... as soon as you open your mouth or start swallowing, it becomes a spice bomb, with a follow through that feels similar to Four Roses to me. A little bit of cinnamon and rye spice on the follow through.
Some gripes about it. I don’t think I will want to drink multiple glasses of this in a row, it can feel a little thin, and there is a little bit of bitterness every now and then that I’m not loving. It’s super expensive. I bought a 200ml bottle for $25. Probably wouldn’t buy a full 750 ml bottle of it.
Overall, I’m glad I tried this. It’s got a very definite journey of flavors that it takes you through each sip. Starts out tasting almost like a wheated bourbon, and the follow through almost resembles a rye. Very interesting experience, and it is pretty unique that you actually can pick out a pecan/nutty note in it.
