So I saw smoke wagon and I just bough it. Pretty sure I got ripped off. 100 bucks?
Anyway to the nose. pretty classic MGP notes, reasonably aged elements, rye spices, baking spice, a bit of youthful corn spirit the more I dig, a bit of a green fruit and kinda dull overall.
Taste - I get a saw dust and youthful MGP corn mash. There's a bit of funky spice, perhaps a blend of 80% young and 20% older. It's a bit funky and it's clearly young. Toasted vanilla oak and some milk chocolate.
It's interesting my first impression of this was chocolate and funky oak, but the more I go back this reminds me of my tumblin' dice 5 year pick. That young under aged MGP, but then this has some older notes.
So I know I got ripped off on this (they sold out mind you), but ignoring that. This is funky and there's a weird mix of old and young whisky notes. I'm liking it, but not that much. 1.75 score here. There's just so much better whisky.
It's a cool bottle and at about 50 bucks, I'd say give it a go if you're adventurous, but it'll be well below average for 50.

@dhsilv2 Good to know that the 6-7 year line is something to look for in an MGP. I did see that you called out some older notes, but I figured you just meant they threw in a day's of 10 YO. I guess it doesn't matter what age it is though if it $35 is about a fair price, since that's really the important point.
@ContemplativeFox well, as you'll notice, I very much think there was a touch of older whisky in there. How much I'm not sure, but it wasn't all young. It just didn't manage to hide the youth and I have some serious issues with MGP under about 6-7 years old. It just comes off really bad to me, especially their high rye ones. Some people however like their younger stuff more then me and the mix of older might work. So give others saying this should be 35-40, which is odd as there was a cheaper smoke wagon offereing (not in cool bottle). But yeah at 35 bucks, I think this is priced fairly, even if I'd pass on another for free.
Seriously disappointing. the fact that they'd disguise such a young and underwhelming spirit in such a cool bottle doesn't make me feel good about smoke wagon. Too bad because I had been under the impression that they were pretty good.
@PBMichiganWolverine my best guess is this wasn't acquired through normal channels, and this the crazy price markup. kentucky allows some more questionable means to aquire hard to get bottles.
@dhsilv2 did they screw up in pricing? There’s a few variants of this—-the higher proof older versions are $100. This same version is about $35-40.
