Tequila Añejo — Los Altos, Jalisco, Mexico

Nose - caramel, toffee, vanilla, mild cracked pepper, sweet dry oak, marshmallow, bamboo, tropical fruit, subtle cooked agave, moderate ethanol burn.
Taste - butterscotch, creamy vanilla, raisin, milk chocolate, sweet cooked agave, oak, spearmint, nutmeg, clove, mild alcohol bite, finishing moderately long with chocolate, mint, and oily, sour, bitter, chemically caramel favors.
This is not a great tequila, but a pleasant sipper nonetheless. In fact, I would probably have some degree of difficulty identifying this as tequila in a blind test, as it hits more like a light-bodied Japanese whiskey or maybe even some weird cognac. I assume it is well reviewed because the included additives make it sweeter and more approachable than a traditionally produced, quality tequila.
I think this would be a good expression for introducing the spirit to whiskey or non-liquor drinkers. However, the price is completely unwarranted; I think the standard DJ Añejo at half the price is a step up (and even that one is, in my opinion, overpriced).

@Whiskylonghorn 1942 is what happens when famous rappers become customers.. of course that doesn't mean actual quality of product as you could say the same thing for Capriccio sangria wine.
@WhiskeyLonghorn Totally agree with you on the allocation. I assume they just didn't expect to suddenly get so popular and haven't had a chance yet to expand production. It's ridiculous that plain Weller, Elmer T Lee, Stagg Jr, Blanton's, EH Taylor, Eagle Rare, Sazerac, and now even plain old Buffalo Trace are difficult to find!
@ContemplativeFox BT bugs me because they allocate damn near everything. I can find WT 101 in any liquor store in America, but BT plays games with enthusiasts with this will they/won’t they allocation game. I’m over it. If you can find their products at MSRP, I agree, the price is fair, bit so often you can only find it for silly money on secondary.
@WhiskeyLonghorn Yeah, a lot of these big companies are out of control. I thought Sazerac was doing ok though? BT products are expensive, but MSRP for them still isn't all that high.
Lovely review. I’ve passed on this one for the reasons you’ve described. I’m also becoming less and less patient with who or whomever at Diageo sets their prices. They’re the worst offender of the lot when it comes to profit over product and people. That said, Edrington, Constelation, and Sazarac are pretty high on that list for me too...
This seems to have gone up from $110 to $150 lately. I prefer it to the standard añejo, but I have to agree that it's crazily overpriced.
