They say lightning doesn't strike twice but I popped into a local whisky store and hello hello an old Black and White. Now the last one I got to try was a 1980's. This was from 1966 and at $10USD a pour or $200 USD a bottle damn good value. I got to see the half opened cask with a number of unopened bottles remaining.
Similar to the 1980s one from dramfest. It's like molasses, burnt rich toffee. Really interesting. Night and day from todays bland offerings. I still can't believe you can still get 50+ year bottlings so reasonably.

@Richard-ModernDrinking @PBMichiganWolverine @Soba45 I try to sample once a week. I don’t drink during the work week, so a weekend pour is well anticipated. This past weekend I was laid up with a head cold/sinus infection, so no booze was imbibed (and still feeling the effects). The presidential debate was a debacle and I may have to start whisky Wednesday (lol). I hold out for hope that good will ultimately win over bad and worry about what I can control and worry not what I cannot control (try to, at least).
@PBMichiganWolverine Ah sorry to hear that mate. Yeah i just think sometimes best stop reading and watching the stuff. I just thought the supporters of each side have made up there mind a debate isn't going to change anyones mind. I didn't watch our debate but I heard it was a bit more civilised! I still can't understand 40% of USA thinks that way....
@PBMichiganWolverine I don’t think I’m a model! If anything, I’ve been drinking more.
@PBMichiganWolverine Sympathies. I think I speak for most outside the US when I ask ‘wtf happened to you guys’. That prez debate couldn’t have highlighted our befuddlement any better.
@Soba45 with that said, I’ve actually not have had a pour since 6 weeks. Honestly, with so much going around nowadays ( racism, economic collapse , CV19 , protests), I’ve sort of spiraled into full blown anxiety. This is the worst I’ve seen in my life. I think all I’ve had in 6 weeks was one can of beer while watching the US presidential debate ...which spiraled me more into anxiety. I think our model of balance will now be @Scott_E or @Richard-ModernDrinking
@CKarmios I was a (to) prolific sampler and drank way to regularly so the ideal would be more @PBMichiganWolverine or @Scott_E level i.e. every now and then. And yes just stuff I enjoy. I'll take a break for a bit and hopefully ease back in :-)
@Soba45 Quality vs quantity?
@Soba45 wow, that's some sort of luck I guess... Good for you going the healthy route now :)
@ContemplativeFox Yes luckily the auction pickings here in nz are very slim and random or could get dangerous. I'm currently going the otherway and offloading bottles. Another 4 going out the door next week. Trying to be healthier...zero junk in the house and minimal alcohol :-).
You clearly know some great local liquor stores. I've had little success with them in my area. I find some allocated bourbon now and then, but otherwise I have to resort to buying from liquor stores online. I'd be interested to go to an auction, but I worry that then I'll buy something...
@ContemplativeFox I often poke around in liquor stores, occasionally look on line at spirit auctions and (now very infrequently) attend events. Still a lot of nuggets out there :-)
How do you find these? This is downright amazing.
