Ezra Brooks Distiller's Collection/Selected by Virginia ABC
Barrel #7167088/Barreled 9/3/15
Between 4-5 Years?
NOSE: Light in color, the nose starts off with some Heat followed by: Orange Peel, Peanut Shell, Oak, Light Rye Spice, and a Mild Sweetness.
NEAT: Thin & Hot. Roasted Peanut, Bitter Oak, and a Light General Sweetness precede an overly Bitter Finish with Peanut and Bitter Oak lingering to coat the palate.
SPLASH: A few drops of water add Caramel to both Nose and Palate. This still has an overall Bitter Character.
VERDICT: "Hand Picked From Extraordinary Barrels" according to the label. That doesn't appear to be the case. With the heavy peanut notes and bitter oak, even though Heaven Hill is the likely source, this is more like reject Beam Barrels. Picked this up simply because it was something I couldn't get at home. At $35 this would be a hard pass if I was traveling through VA again. Just not a profile that I am a fan of.

@BDanner man... when someone says Distiller’s Edition I immediately think of Diageo scotches... sounds like Luxco might have a different vision (and pricepoint)!
I was wrong about the price on this one. I remember it being around $26 but couldn't find my receipt so I looked it up on VA ABC website where they list it at $35. I found my receipt tonight, and it actually was $26. Worth a flyer for that price if you see it.
@ContemplativeFox I was skeptical given its relatively young age, but still had hopes for it given the quality of some of Luxco’s other special releases.
What a disappointment! I was interested because I had no idea they had a distillers edition, but this just sounds like a swindle.
@Anthology I think he’s probably referring to the new cask strength Old Ezra 7. Although, I agree, if you see the old discontinued 101 grab it. Alas, it was never sold in NC or VA that I’m aware of.
@Zachary-Robbins nice. I looked at the Magnus as well, but was happier picking up the Lag8 and the Yamazaki 12. I learned the other day that VA’s ABC website will let you enter your zip code and give you inventory on items. Not sure if it’s accuracy, though.
@Zachary-Robbins Yeah, Old Ezra 7yr 101 is a good one to hold out for. Good luck with the hunt!
@BDanner Thanks for the quick review, I'll hold out hope I see an Old Ezra 7 one of these days.
@BDanner I already did yesterday to Danville lol. I didn't see this, Lag8, or that Rebel Yell at two stores I stopped at. Contemplated buying Joseph Magnus or W.B. Saffell, which were at both stores, but didn't pull the trigger because they were both pricey. Trip would've been a bust, but I stopped at my favorite Chapel Hill store and managed to snag my second 1792 Full Proof in 2 weeks plus Uncle Nearest 1856. Totally redeemed myself!
@Zachary-Robbins I wouldn't make a special trip for this one (or at least this barrel). VA does also carry a REBEL Distiller's Collection for $40 that I wish I'd seen. 113 Proof Rebel Yell may be very good.
