Talisker Select Reserve (Game of Thrones-House Greyjoy)

Single Malt — Islands, Scotland

Reviewed October 6, 2020 (edited June 3, 2021)

4.25 out of 5 stars
This one wasn’t easy for me to find and as a Talisker fan I’m very happy that I did. It reminds me a lot of the classic 10 although gentler this time. On the nose there is less brine and pepper and more of what seems to be sherry sweetness (I could bet there are some sherry casks on the mix here). The palate is a bit less spicy and again, a tad sweeter. The finish is savoury, simply delicious, making it dangerously quaffable. (Peat wise they are very similar for me) This one was a very pleasant surprise,a very good whisky, not just a gimmick. I would say it is softer than the 10, not as refined as the 18, but great value nonetheless. I recommend it even for the ones out there there aren’t big fans of the Talisker profile (yet!).

@cascode I've consistently heard that the Mortlach was the biggest standout, and it'd better have been at 15 years and more than twice the cost of the others.

@cascode I heard the Oban was Little Bay on a fancy black tube hence my lack of interest.

@WhiskeyLonghorn Well, for me the Lagavulin and this Talisker were OK but not particularly notable, and the rest of the franchise tie-ins were just marketing (and in at least one case simply a relabel). The Clynelish was OK, but again nothing spectacular. IMHO the Oban and Mortlach additions to the original cast were way superior to the rest. @PBMichiganWolverine I know - Diagio sold "collectable" kool-aid and the market embraced it.

To think, at one point, this entire series was selling in the secondary for well over £800

This was easily the standout of the GOT line. Lag was ok, much better than the rest. If I see another bottle of this one I’ll probably pick it up.

@AntonioSchmid I'm looking forward to reading your tasting of that one as well then :)

@ContemplativeFox I also bought the Laga 9 (both on Lisboa airport duty free). They were the only ones from the GoT line I was interested in.

I hear good things about this and the GoT Lag. It makes sense that the changed them to have more approachable palates though.
