@Soba45 Ah, very clever, jam them in the food cubbord for easy access ;)
@ContemplativeFox More a few whisky and gin bottles jammed in the food cupboard along with a bunch of wine bottles :-)
@Soba45 Wow, that's really a small bar! The extra money is always good though.
@ContemplativeFox I'm thinking of eventually getting down to around 3. Decent sherry, decent peat and a random. Then cycle them through e.g. my peat is Springbank 18, then Talisker 8... and then I'll think about the next one.
@WhiskeyLonghorn @WhiskeyLonghorn Nice planned set up. sounds a good solid mix. Yeah now my booze spend has declined have a lot more $$ on hand!
@WhiskeyLonghorn Drinking always means sacrificing health and, frankly, it probably isn't worth it on more than the rare occasion considering the detriment. Seems like a good move on your part :)
@ContemplativeFox I love mixing cocktails and the creativity that goes with it, but my body has been giving me stronger signs lately that it can’t handle the double whammy of alcohol and sugars. I’m down to the 1-2 drams on the weekend, and sometimes not even that.
@WhiskeyLonghorn Ah, that makes sense if you're staying in the whiskey/rum area and not going for cocktails :)
@Soba45 Maybe I should just drink one REALLY good bottle of whiskey at a time and then I won't miss having a bottle of anything else 😂
@ContemplativeFox FWIW I’m still getting it dialled in, but the goal is: 1. Good sipping bourbon 2. Good sipping rum 3. Sherry bomb 4. Peat monster 5. Trophy bottle I’m down to 9 bottles of whiskey and one rum, and when the cocktail ingredients run out they run out. My wallet and my liver can’t handle chasing down special releases and high recommendations anymore. Time to enjoy what I have and focus on quality over quantity.
@ContemplativeFox It's a lot easier for me as I just drink whisky and gin :-)
@WhiskeyLonghorn I keep reading variations of the 5 bottle bar, but I can never figure out how I would get down to 5 bottles. Is that supposed to include liqueurs? I start counting up and it quickly gets out of the allowed margin for error: vodka/gin, tequila, rum, rye/bourbon, malt, peated malt, something special, triple sec, amaro, ...
@WhiskeyLonghorn Ah interesting. I still sleep but generally it's a rubbish one after 1 or 2 as doesn't help my mild sleep apnea! Moderation is sometimes a hard challenge I find...friends came over last night and the wine and g&t flowed slightly too freely...feeling my head this morning; i should have stopped at the midway point i think! On average consumption is heading down though... the less temptation the better so a 5 bottle limit of all spirits maybe a good goal to aim for. Good luck on your journey!
@Soba45 good for you! I’ve started to hit a similar wall with whiskey. More than one dram and I’m guaranteed not to sleep anymore. I’ve offloaded quite a bit to friends and neighbors and I’m down to around ten bottles. Trying to get it down to just a rye, a bourbon, a sherry, a smokey, and something for a special occasion. Lots of chatter on the whiskey web the past few years about the five bottle bar and variants. I’m finding it more and more of a good idea. Especially since I can only drink so much at once.
@Soba45 good ones to keep.
@1901 Between 20 to 30 in the end I think. Most were just worth way more than i paid for them. Old Pultney 21 i paid $115 USD went for $400. Might have been nice to try the Laphroaig 18 again. Glendronach 21 umed and 'ard a bit b4 I offloaded to a friend. The Glendronach 14 year virgin oak. The rest wasn't to upset as I'd drunk enough of them. Kept the Longrow 18, Springbank 18, Redbreast 21, Talisker 8 special and Kilchoman Red Wine plus various other minor remnants. I was never going to drink it in my lifetime. I'd have opened a bottle, drunk a bit then given a lot away to friends. Going fwd just going to limit my bottles to a few. Less variety means less temptation:-)
@Soba45 just wondering how many bottles did you get rid of, and was there one that was difficult to decide to part company with?
@PBMichiganWolverine Not completely but I've sold off most of my whiskey collection. Only several bottles remaining. Gin and Tonic is my go to as mixed drinks easier on the stomach. It's a lot easier to get hold of gin samples either offered up at retailers or small sample bottles. I've stopped importing whisky and other samples from overseas. I go through phases and after several years the whiskey one is almost at a close. Moving more into an occasional dram from one of my remaining bottles or maybe anything randomly offered up to me. I'd say I'll always have a couple of bottles on hand similar to gin but who knows next year I maybe completely clean living :-)
Have you left the whisky world and gone full gin?
