Dalmore King Alexander III

Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland

Reviewed October 11, 2020 (edited January 27, 2021)

3.75 out of 5 stars
At some point in my whisky journey I’ve had a pour or two of Dalmore but am quite confident that I’ve never owned a bottle. Thanks to the massive generosity of @PBMichiganWolverine I was able to try a sample of this Dalmore offering. There’s no doubt this is a delicious and drinkable whisky but the 40% abv leaves it a bit thin and can’t recall any real stand-out tasting notes. A quick scope online reveals an eye-popping price tag in the $240 range. If this bottle was $70, I’d still choose Kilkerran 12 or Ardbeg Uigeadail or Springbank 10 over this any day of the week. Cheers again PB for sending over a taste I probably would never have tried otherwise.

    I was underwhelmed by this when tasting at WhiskeyLive. I thought the Dalmore 16 was better. That said with Dalmore and Jura on offer, the Whyte & Mackay stand at the event was underwhelming overall.

    @CKarmios :-)

    @PBMichiganWolverine You might say that, but on this side of the pond the stag is made of the best plastic pellets, aged in first-fill molding machines for at least an hour before pouring.

    My god. Who the heck does come up with these prices? I mean sure the 6 different cask types used cost money but I doubt that they were first fills anyway. But last I checked you pay for quality and intensity - both of which obviously don’t deliver here - especially with that insulting 40% ABV. The arrogance is insane. The more you read about people’s personal independent opinion about this distillery the more you get assured to avoid it in the first place.

    @jonwilkinson7309 Yeah, I tend to think that any bottle north of $200 should pretty much blow me away

    @ContemplativeFox funny you say that. Originally I really did think that it was so expensive b/c the stag was out of gold. Like what Macallan does with the Baccarat bottles. Much to my chagrin, it’s cheap plastic .

    @WhiskeyLonghorn that link that @ScotchingHard has on his review —did you take a look at it? It’s hysterical. You can almost see that poor woman interviewing him re-evaluating every life choice she made that got her there

    Wow, I'd never noticed that this was only 40% before. @PBMichiganWolverine I think we might be paying up for the cool stag on the bottle.

    I agree completely. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to try the King Alexander at a restaurant. Fortunately, because while it was reasonably nice, it wasn't even close to $200 nice, IMO.

    @ScotchingHard has the best “ why Dalmore sucks” rant.

    Dalmore are severely overpriced. For some reason, they think they’re Macallan. Minus the Macallan laurels.
