Macallan Edition No. 6
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed
October 17, 2020 (edited April 4, 2021)
Nose - Rich vanilla, toasted ginger, toffee, dried apples, persimmons, candied ginger, hint of orange zest, plums, sweet riesling
Taste - Gentle sweet ginger & honey tea, light tea/oak bitterness, light bitter orange pith, light bitter dark chocolate, vanilla simple, dried persimmons
Finish - Lingering light metallic fruity bitter, honey sweetened tea, candied ginger, light toasted/charred ginger bitterness
Score - 85/100
Final Thoughts - The nose on this one is quite fantastic really. It's complex, composed, and actually noses like it might contain some older Scotch in it. It has this pleasant "must" that I only get from older Scotches that makes me think of a dusty old cask that's been sitting in a warehouse aging for decades. The initial palate is nice, but then it picks up this slightly odd fruity metallic note that I sometimes get from dried fruits. It's not off-putting, but it's noticeable. The toasted ginger notes are nice and provide this nice gentle sweetness without the heat.
Would I drink it if offered? - Yes
Would I specifically order it? - Maybe
Would I buy a bottle? - Not at the price it's at

That is baffling @PBMichiganWolverine Now I'm curious about what's higher on your list.
@ContemplativeFox probably bottom of the list in items that confound me...but that Brujeira is available only in TX ( of course, I get it)...and Australia (??!!?).
I love just a few states away from Texas and I've never seen it either @cascode :(
Interesting statement about the sheet and port finishes. Do you know what kind of sherry they use @WhiskeyLonghorn ?
@WhiskeyLonghorn I can't find anyone out here who sells it - I doubt we've ever had an allocation.
@PBMichiganWolverine it’s the Brujeria. It’s available around Texas but I can’t speak to the wider availability.
@WhiskeyLonghorn which is their sherry one? (Balcones). Wondering if it’s widely available or distillery only
@cascode I live a little over an hour south of the Balcones distillery. I quite enjoyed the sherry finish at the distillery. Much better than the port finish, which just doesn’t work with Texas heat. The sherry helps balance out the over oakiness of a lot of Texas whisky. Highly recommend a bottle if you fancy a fancy American single malt.
@WhiskeyLonghorn @PBMichiganWolverine It's on special at one liquor shop, very possibly clearing old stock. The Sherry Wood expression (only) is $40 off the normal price, the rest of the range from that shop is US$85, and at other stores the prices are US$100-120. Still pretty good value, and a mystery to me. US spirits are typically much more expensive here.
@PBMichiganWolverine who knows...when I moved from Denver to Austin, I noticed that stranahans sells for less in Texas than it does in Colorado so who knows how this pricing crap goes...
@cascode @WhiskeyLonghorn how does that work?! Less in AUS than US where it’s made?
@cascode that Westland is less $$$ in Australia than here! $95 where I’m at.
@PBMichiganWolverine @WhiskeyLonghorn Thanks for those mentions - I don't think we get Stranahans here but we do get Balcones. The Brujeria expression looks interesting, and sounds very much like the profile of some Australian single malts, which is not surprising. Must see if I can get a bottle. Westland Sherry Wod is currently on special at one outlet for the equivalent of US$65, which sounds like a good buy.
@PBMichiganWolverine @cascode Balcones also has a sherry cask finish. Also pricy. Stranahans sherry cask has gone down in price. I remember trying the first batch, which was a little over cooked in the sherry cask, but now they really have it dialled in. Very tasty.
@cascode i think I was thinking of that North Star Longmorn 15. I remember seeing it and thinking it must be really good. Can’t recall if I bought it. For American sherry maturation—-yeah, many are doing it. Stranahan’s, Westland are the two that come to mind. But they’re young ( <5-6 yr), and pricey ( $110-140).
Are any of the American malt whisky producers using sherry maturation? I've not seen any, but we get very little out here.
@PBMichiganWolverine There was a 15 year old full oloroso matured Longmorn in the North Star Range 10 which was excellent. Also any of the Vega bottlings are worth picking up - very good value for old blended malt. I've tasted two different Glenrothes expressions from them (can't remember the details but they were recent Cask Range releases) and I wasn't that enthusiastic. Glenrothes is all over the place.
The Tamdhu batch strength bottlings are the best value from their range, in terms of quality and VFM. GlenDronach are still just barely the sherried whisky to beat but who knows how long that will last. Macallan hasn't released a really tasty good-value expression in the last 3-4 years. The only Macallans I've truly enjoyed in the last decade were the first batch of Sienna and an 18 year old from 2012, before all this nonsense of different cask types. There's the odd excellent apera matured whisky locally (Limeburners, Overeem and Iniquity) but the output is not consistent and they are hardly "value" bottlings. Kavalan and Amrut can both pull the occasional rabbit out of the hat, too, but again hardly "value".
@PBMichiganWolverine been paying sub 150 for some picks of kavalan so still value there, but yeah solists are pricey.
@dhsilv2. Tamdhu now has climbed up as well? Maybe the IBs can still be value. There’s some really good PX matured IBs from Glenrothes and Longmorn ( North Star I think). I love Kavalan, but some of the Soloist ones can climb north of $300-400.
@PBMichiganWolverine I mean the 15 year tamdhu is already pushing into the 100's. They're not value for money imo either. Right now my secrete are the picks from Kavalan if you want a sherry bomb. Honestly fair priced sherried whisky is a challange. That said the new 15 from Glendronach is the best bang for buck on the market. It might not be the old one, but it's still a winner for the price.
@WhiskeyLonghorn and reasonable
@PBMichiganWolverine Tamdhu is damn good for sure. Different from GD or Mac, but a lovely, spicy spirit.
Good to know what the next hot sherried scotch is likely to be @PBMichiganWolverine :)
@dhsilv2 yeah I’ve been done with them as well for a long time. Glendronach was the “new “ Macallan, and that’s also not what it was once. I think Tamdhu might be the better sherry matured VFM
@PBMichiganWolverine I paid 100 for 4 and 5....I've been a sucker for this series and I'm DONE with them! 4 was very good, but 5 was another completely forgettable whisky for another 100 bucks of my money. Macallan has got to stop this crap! HOw long are they going to live on their name? And how long is their name going to be worth something?
@washeewashee @PBMichiganWolverine sadly, makes sense
@washeewashee good point...those 25% tariffs are probably to blame.
@PBMichiganWolverine @Scott_E - My guess for the price increase at least here in the States is due to the 25% tariff
Thx for the detailed review. I like this one best
Totally agree @Scott_E
@ContemplativeFox Mac just knows the name alone places a premium on the items and they take full advantage. Which is why I usually shy away from them. There is better for less.
Geeze, that sure escalated. It's not like Macallan was at all cheap when these started coming out. @Scott_E @PBMichiganWolverine
@PBMichiganWolverine yes. As you stated, these started in the $90 range. The 4/5 series in the $125 range. I have now seen the 6 in two different locales in the $160 range.
@PBMichiganWolverine I will hold on to it and see what happens. I am in no rush. If I decide not to sell, I will drink and share.
Did they increase the prices on these?!? Edition 1 was barely $80-90. The last one I bought, edition 4, was $110. Seems like they made a drastic jump.
@Scott_E there’s two schools of thought on your series. One is to sell immediately while the stokes are still burning. Like when folks sold their GoT series right before the shows ended. Sold for thousand dollars. Another school is to wait some years. Macallan always demands premium, and that won’t go away.
I expect a complete series will go for a pretty penny in 10 years @Scott_E
"@PBMichiganWolverine the price is just outrageous for this, however I will wind up getting one to complete the series (1->6)
Was this the best of the series? ( I’m assuming worst was 1 )
